As a NR I can’t tell Wyoming how to do things. It just won’t be my first choice when putting in for elk hunts. If I had a higher income to the point that the difference between that an other states prices didn’t effect me I’d definitely go for it. As long as some other states retain lower price points for elk tags I’m fine with Wyoming having higher ones as well. If all states went that high I would consider it being priced out but at this point it’s just a choice I make to apply somewhere else.

At $1200 a tag, that's a whopping $25 a week I'd have to save to afford it. Take lunch to work twice a week instead of eating out and it's paid for. $1200 isn't a lot of money these days unfortunately

As a half assed hunter, idk if this is true.
Honestly, $700 is a little rich for my blood.
I could prob have just as much fun just backpacking and save enough money for a brand new set of skis.
Or buy a mtb lift ticket.
Or just bike pack.
Not saying it’s necessarily a bad thing.

For some people it’s not that they can’t find the money to pay $2k for an elk tag. It comes down to being responsible. One side job could get me an elk tag at the “special” price. But it could also get me a week vacation with my wife and 2 kids. Or could be contributed to a college fund. Too many side jobs puts too much burden on my wife and takes time away from the family. It’s selfish. I guess complaining does no good. The kids would probably have as much fun spending a week bird hunting and beaver trapping. Plenty of fun to be had out there for a reasonable cost.

One and done guys may benefit from changes like this. Creating long term advocates for public land and wildlife, not so much.

I think this hits the nail on the head, in a time when hunter recruitment is down. People new to western hunting will probably be turned off by this, but if you look at everyday cost they have gone up on everything. When I took my kids on vacation in the nineties I spent $2500 for two weeks, so it's just a matter of where do you want to spend your money. I don't like the changes, but that being said I'm still going to play the game, I'm still going to support wildlife management and public lands.

National recruitment issues are due to land ownership issues. We don’t have that problem in the west. We don’t need to make up for the lack of hunters in the east. The east hunters need to figure that out not recruit more people to pound the west

Hunter recruitment in the west is the biggest lie that’s ever been sold to the hunting public. It will lead to less advocates in the long run. They could raise prices to $4000 and still sell their elk tags.

That's true, same with all the hunting forums and magazines that have promoted hunting in the western states.

I would add, people get interested in hunting and decide to move out here. But @Huntkook it’s the increase in residents that are actually increasing pressure since nr’s are usually limited
