2025 Garden!

My asparagus has started poking through. I'll have to cover it with the freeze coming.
I checked one patch in my yard last week. I was not surprised to see nothing popping through. I have three wild patches in the ditch. I was thinking about burning the ditch to see if that would make it appear sooner.

Came back from vacation to 85 degree weather and a bunch of new growth. Big cold front is on the way though, might touch freezing Wednesday morning. Hopefully the peas and lettuce didn't mind a couple hot days and the peppers and tomatoes will be fine getting covered. 20250406_082631.jpg20250406_082637.jpg

Speargrass as my wife calls it it's pretty Frost hardy. It grew wild along the South Platte River by the farm we used to live on. Unless you are expecting a hard frost I am not sure you have much to worry about. Also depend on variety.

Take a look at walls of water. I use those on a lot of things. Beer in Cheyenne we are expecting '70s all next week and 40s at night. Some stuff I'm just planning and some stuff I'm putting lots of water around them. Them things really work and I have a abundance of tomatoes and squash every year. Another thing you can do that I sometimes do is take and build a 2x2 frame over them and use some heavier Mill plastic as a tent cover. Needs to be clear plastic to let sign in but that also holds the heat enough to get us through spring.

Got Early Girl tomatoes, cherry tomatoes, strawberries, blueberries, sweet corn, and radishes started. Cold sensitive stuff like the tomatoes or in the water for protection from the remaining spring frosts that are sure to come. I expect to have an overabundance of tomatoes starting in late June IF we avoid the hail storms in that period of time. I got zucchini growing in the four walls of water by the lilacs. They produce so fast I will pull the old ones as soon as they stop producing fruit and replant.

Things are starting to take off. Some winter vegetables are on the verge of harvest brussel sprouts and cabbage. Spring/summer veggies are starting to put on fruit. Cucumbers, squash. Zucchini,. Beans and tomatoes are just starting to flower. Corn was planted two days ago. Potatoes are looking great and the two different sweet potatoes I have in the ground are starting to show some good growth. Looking good so far overall.

Got the tiller hooked up, greased and gear oil checked. Just need the ground to dry out some. Raining it's a$$ off here for the last few weeks. Need to finish my deer fence this weekend.

I'm pretty sure I had most my planting done this time last year , ground temp needs to come up a little more imo.

I've got potatoes planted in grow bags. That's it. Will probably plant carrots and lettuce this weekend. Not in a hurry with the wet and cold.

Grow bags with potatoes started. I have Russett potatoes and one and red potatoes in the other three. Four more grow bags on order then I'm going to plant four more bags of red potatoes. Typically you get roughly 3/4 of a bushel at harvest time per bag. I may get more bags and stash around the yard where other stuff won't grow because potatoes are something that is frost hardy and I can even live in the ground in the winter if I want to.

All my carrots and potatoes go in grow bags. So much easier to harvest and no damage to them from the digging up process.

Tell me about these grow bags please. I’ve been growing potatoes in old stacked tires. Needless to say, it looks a little rough.

The are basically heavy duty landscape fabric sewn into a bag. My sister buys them dirt cheap from temu.

I use potting mix in mine. Thete is a place I buy it in bulk.

Went to go pick up some serranos from the garden supply and ended up getting them, habañeros, and Thai birds eyes to put in some empty containers I had sitting around. My squash never sprouted so I picked up a couple seedlings of those as well. Got some more rain this evening, looks like we're exiting the drought pattern we had been in.
