The next surge

One thing you can count on is that newsome will be grandstanding to lie about all the support the state will give them then shit all over them before dumping it on the feds. He's had practice . It's exactly what he did to us. People weren't allowed to rebuild through county bullshit and insurance companies wouldn't pay. We lost 1/2 our population and 2 resulting suicides. Beware of newsome for your next president.
Newsom's shelf life is pretty close to the expiration date. The more people get to see him perform, the less viable he is on a national level.

Would someone who is used to all the convenience of city living actually want to live and tolerate all the things that you take as normal daily living?
I work for a high end custom home builder in Montana. We have clients that come from big cities all over the US. Trust me. They aren't exactly roughing it when they are here. mtmuley

Understood. Do you have decent supply of water? A 500' posthole could cost 50k. Access road maybe another 50. Finding a reliable contractor that has a 2 hour daily commute is tough. Then getting through the ridiculous county permit process can take a year or more. We don't have much new construction. Maybe someone hardy soul will invest 1m to give it a shot every few years but most people with that kind of cash are smarter than that.

I've never seen a single person at the nice crib down in the river bottom over many years. Seems like a shame to me. Looks like you are getting ready to build a good sized machine shed in the hayfield, last time I was by there. Your clients sure do prime the economy, that's for sure. Some of the trees came from the nursery.

I wonder if we will see things cool off a bit in five years. I have been here almost four years now. You need a few years at least under your belt before you start to get a real feel for the weather. I love the outdoors. After two days of being couped up inside I start to go bananas. But man, the wind this year where I live.....uggh. even I'm getting pissed off. I have some new rifle loads that have been on my bench for two weeks. Two weeks! Totally unacceptable. I usually get once a week this time of year and catch white fish. Have not been out once. I could but I would need a fly that weighed four ounces.

All kidding aside, my point is you really need to enjoy being outside. And you need to be willing to deal with the weather. I suppose you can go hang out in a bar, but there are areas in the country much better suited for that.

I think many people will last three years, then move. The wealthy that have a second home here is a different story, but for now that is not the majority of the newcomers.

It's a "recreation" barn. Haven't seen much of the details but it should be nice. They don't use that little place by the river much. And it is really nice. We are starting a project at Tammany and Duess lane right now. Going to tear down a house that is only about 5 years old. Our clients do prime the economy around here. You must sell trees to Caleb? mtmuley

We saw a significant influx of people here in Northern Nevada after the Camp fire. We’re just on the other side of the Sierras from them so it made sense, but they filled up the rental and housing market for a good while afterwards. I’d guess the surrounding communities to the current fires will absorb those burned out pretty well, and there won’t be all that much outside impact.

Location. Lots of wealthy folks want a mountain home. From what I have seen, most of them spend way more time here than they originally intended to. Some even have become permanent residents. People with money have options. mtmuley

I can't see a mass migration from the So Cal beach vibe leaving that easy life and climate for a Montana winter.
They don't have to brave the winter. At least not some of them. Where I am our airport supports the bigger jets now. I know of some that actually commute from Western Montana to LA via jet. mtmuley

Not sure who the landscaper was. We had hundred plus large ball and burlap aspens dug out of the field last year. They sold like hot cakes at over $400 a pop.

mt.muley, I'm curious as to your population density? Before our wildfire in 2020 there were about 75 or so in 100 sq.mi. now there may be 30 full-time residents, not families but residents.

I live in the Bitterroot Valley of Montana. Not sure of the numbers but density is high by my standards. The Gallatin is the only place in Montana that possibly is more populated. mtmuley
