ideas for traversing the Northern tier states

When I retire, I would like to just take a drive for weeks at a time wandering aimlessly.
Now that I am retired I have no time for that. Always said I would do it, but I never have since I've retired. I have many fewer ticks left on the clock. I have to spend them most expeditiously by racing around like a chicken with its head cut off. Do it now!

Do it now!
Easier said than done. Like everything. Fingers crossed I can go at 55. Went to union meeting last night where several members got there gold cards (work til 70). No phuggin way. Some of those guys had 50 years in. To each his own, but I'm not leaving that money on the table. They had to be making considerably less working than they would have retired. I will work until I'm not able to physically but it won't be doing what I do now on someone else's time table.

I would suggest by passing Chicago by traveling to Manitowoc WI to take the Ferry across Lake Michigan to Ludington Michigan. In Manitowoc, there is a Maritime Museum of Great Lakes, includes how submarines for WWII were built there. Once in Ludington, swing north to Traverse City explore wineries. Head across Mackinac bridge and drive to Whitefish Point to visit the Great Lakes Maritime museum. Great stuff on the Fitzgerald. Heading west, stop at Picture Rocks area, beautiful stop plus opportunity to go out on glass bottom boats for wreck tour.

Gaylord Michigan visit Jays Spts. Really nice place.

Just a thought! Enjoy your trip!
Been to Jays several times. Been across the Mighty Mac a bunch when I was younger. My Uncle had a summer place in Paradise though I do not know if it is still in the family due to his passing. Might look at the ferry going West bound even though US 2 across the UP would be pretty.

Where in Michigan are you planning? Born and raised here. You’ll love it
I was born and raised in Central MI. Gratiot County. Ran away with the circus in '85 and landed in Northern CA. We have been making the trip for the past few years to visit family.

My Father and Brother in law both Union Roofers went out at 55. Both were debt free and have health care through the Union retirement. I pulled the plug at 57 having zero debt and healthcare through my military retirement. Wife bailed same time I did. We bought our travel trailer the year before we pulled the plug so we would be ready to go. We have been through all of the Western states in our "big" camper except the Northern tier. We have had the "little camper" in Oregon, Washington and Idaho for Idaho deer camp the past several years.
