I find it hard to buy "no new cases" - is there any active virus on the planet that literally has zero new cases? There may be a huge down swing which would be great, but zero? Seems like Kim Jong golfing a perfect round of 18. A little communist over statement?

And I agree that we all need to watch for a "bounce" when China/S. Korea/Italy drop their quarantines. Hopefully not, but seems likely.

Last I read N Korea has zero😜

The bounce will be part of the continued propaganda bullshit

People have been posting links and information from the experts for 34 pages now. If no one has yet posted links to support your pre-conceived opinion, perhaps that should tell you something.

I fear this is quickly becoming another thread whose usefulness has been torpedoed by a couple stubborn a$$es.

This has become strikingly similar to a CWD thread. Go figure.

You missed the ron paul article.....he agrees.

Sadly that should tell us all we need to know.

They say masks are not effective from not contracting this, but yet any news showing any image or video in China everyone is wearing one. What gives?

I assume I'm one of the stubborn a$$es for posting factual data that does not fit the chosen narrative. Not trying to torpedo anything. Just putting info out there like everyone else to digest at their leisure. If I posted anything that was not factual or my math was wrong I'd be glad to reconsider. The title does say "discussion". It didnt' say "no dissenting opinions or data".

This whole situation is scary. The disease is scary. The reaction to the disease is scary. Even more scary to me. But I'd like to keep a civil discussion going if possible. Thanks

I am not saying this is the full answer, but masks are a big deal culturally in Asia - in the middle of generic summer season (lowest cold/flu time) Tokyo is still filled with folks wearing them.

I'm shocked that Spring Break is still going on in the south and not a single Governor has done anything. This isn't the only disease that's being spread on the beaches of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina.

It seems we need to be very careful not to let the reaction do more harm than the virus itself.

People losing a week or two weeks of work isn’t the end of the world. They’ll get through it.

If this goes on and on and on, and people start to lose their jobs permanently in large numbers and there is no hiring like in 2008, with 20% unemployment like some are already predicting and all the chaos, crime, suicide etc and everything that goes along with that, we are going to be in a very bad spot.

A few weeks of suffering through shutdowns right now will be worth the long term benefit if it makes conditions improve and we get where China claims it is today.
I have a hard time imaging how things are today with people not working and all events, school, etc being canceled, persisting this way for 6 months and everything being peachy and back to normal at the end of it.

One small example I know of.
Nearly every last semester medical graduate student just had their graduation dates pushed back because they cannot finish their required clinical rotations in the hospitals. It’s a bad time to keep new doctors from entering the job market.

I stand with the majority of people in this thread, but let's not shutdown those who are respectfully posting different views. Things get really boring when everyone is saying the same thing, and I'm sure theres some merit in everyone's contributions. The "ignore " feature is still available if a certain members posts get your dander worked up

Its kind of cultural in those countries, but if you watch you’ll see an awful lot of people wearing them incorrectly so they are doing zero good.

In my former life we did a lot of advising during the Avian Influenza days. Administrative and politician types always jumped immediately to advising everyone to wear masks and/or respirators. Two reasons we advised against that. One, most people don’t wear them correctly. They put them under their nose, push them up to eat/drink, leave them too loose so they gap. All of these render them useless. Two, people who aren’t used to wearing them typically touch their face more, increasing the transfer of pathogens from their hands or the mask to their face.

In the current situation. the social distancing recommendations are likely to be way more effective than people trying to wear masks. The one exception would be that masks are effective at reducing aerosols when worn by people who are infected.

LOL, this thread lost any usefulness about 15 pages ago

Well my wife was just informed she is now an ICU nurse....... They turned the recovery room where she works and turned it into an expanded ICU to get ready for this. Let's hope there is some validity to that Malaria med that is supposed to be doing good in trials. She is 55 this summer, not happy to be part of this. She half joked she should just retire. I told her if they do not offer ALL the proper protection equipment she has my blessing to retire, but also told her this is what she signed up for 30 years ago. She wants me to make sleeping arrangements in the basement and get a TV in the bedroom for her so she can strip down in the garage, head into the bedroom and take a shower and hide out. I hate being anywhere near big cities.

Wishing her the best!

They probably should add “no dissenting opinions or data" to the topic title. Kidding, just kidding guys and gals.

Schmalts and onpoint are likely miles apart on many political issues.
However, I detect agreement about the validity of this whole deal we are all in.
Interesting times. Best wishes to your wife and all.
I have a long time friend/birdhunting bud - RN at a High Line MT hospital. He has density dependence on his side. However he's an RN in a tiny hospital with meager staffing - serves a huge area. How do you suppose their vital supply stockpile is.............................
fwiw........................................................................
