I apologize that I brought up numbers that do not match the worldwide reaction to this virus. China's highest reported number of deaths from Corona is 150 in one day. With an average of 27,000 that doesn't seem super significant. 90%+ folks are saying how bad this is. I'm just trying to provide some under reported data to show some prospective, which is not guessing.
 
I'm still tracking Italy to try to figure out where we are going to be in the next couple weeks.

New cases jumped dramatically today to the highest number yet. 5,322 new cases today. Is this due to more testing or continued spread of the virus?

Deaths dropped back down today to 427 from yesterday's peak of 475, but are still higher than any previous days. They just passed China on total deaths from the virus. Trying to plot the curve it still looks like it is on the upswing and hasn't peaked yet.

I apologize for being obtuse. I am 100% positive that the experts are aware of other/non-virus deaths in the country and are taking that into account.
 
Here is my irritation.

Dad had stage 4 lung cancer.

I went to an appt with him and he asked the Dr about a couple of experimental drugs.

"We don't know the long term effects"

I laughed out loud. LONG TERM EFFECTS. For a stage 4 cancer patient?

We know the malaria drug is safe(ya I ain't gonna try spelling it). We know it's working, even if somewhat. We know it extremely cheap.

Why are we waiting for beaucrats in FDA to determine efficacy?

I know where there are about 11k test subjects.

I know where there is a huge population of do is needing a job.

We are asking millions to bankrupt themselves. Millions to lose everything, yet we are sitting around waiting for beauracrats?

We have the greatest minds, in medical research, greatest Dr on the planet.

Very few are in DC.

Give my Dr the med. Get the lawyers off his back. Let's roll.

If it fails, so be it. Something beats nothing every day of the week.

Thanks, jr. Their patent is very narrow and specific and unlikely to be in the way of any solution for CV-19 -- just another internet goose chase by one of the usual suspects.

Here is the patent claim for the interested:

1. A live, attenuated coronavirus comprising a variant replicase gene encoding polyproteins comprising a mutation in one or both of non-structural protein(s) nsp-10 and nsp-14, wherein the variant replicase gene encodes a protein comprising an amino acid mutation of Pro to Leu at the position corresponding to position 85 of SEQ ID NO: 6, and/or wherein the variant replicase gene encodes a protein comprising an amino acid mutation of Val to Leu at the position corresponding to position 393 of SEQ ID NO: 7.

It would still be nice to see that real number, rather than just trust that they thought of that.

A good story to share with the, "it's just another type of winter cold/flu" crowd. When was the last time an infectious disease killed 3 family members covering an age range from 30-ish to 73 in the same week? Maybe Spanish flu 1918?

Are you comparing that to say SARS, and then looking at the way the Chinese responded to both SARS and Corona, and then extrapolating what Corona virus mortality and transmission rates would look like if handled similarly and then comparing those rates to SARS rates for equivalent periods of time?

Patient 1 Nov --Government got it's poop in a group as early as late Jan/early Feb, still had an order of magnitude more cases.

I mean I would hope WHO and various governments have learned from past diseases and reacted appropriately to reduce transmission and death rates, right?


Here are some of my musings... take them as you will:

Well the death rate is BS, not everyone has been test it will be much lower once more people are tested.
-Have you ever been tested for the flu? Honestly I didn't know there was a flu test, have I probably had the flu... probably. Kinda makes me think the flu mortality rate is actually much lower than reported as well since most people with the flu don't even go in to the doctor or even stop going to work. Kinda makes me think these comparative mortality rates are more apples to apples than some people think.

Well there were only xyz number of deaths with SARS/Swine flu/ etc
-If memory serves... from the time I heard about SARS or Swine to the time I heard about cases in the US was a while... maybe 6 months. Never knew of anyone who got either. Time between hearing about this disease and having there being a shit load of cases in my home town. ~ 3 months. I already personally know people with the virus. The deaths for those diseases were aggregated for ~ 2 years, 600 days, depending on the source. We are barely at the 5 month mark. Totally anecdotal...but still

For the first time since the global coronavirus outbreak began, China has reported no new domestic cases of the illness.

Only eight deaths were reported for Wednesday, all of which occurred in Hubei province, which includes the city of Wuhan where the pandemic started. Globally, the number of coronavirus cases has topped 200,000, according to Johns Hopkins University.

Italy has surpassed China in total deaths connected to the coronavirus, with the country reporting 3,405 fatalities as of Thursday afternoon Eastern Time.
