Somehow it’s cavalier to wonder if it’s reasonable to assume that a man with COPD, and congestive heart failure died of covid-19 not congestive heart failure(which is why excess mortality due to influenza is evaluated based on rising and falling all cause mortality) but it isn’t cavalier for people who can work from home and draw a full paycheck to force business owners who have poured every dime they’ve ever made, along with quite a few dimes they’ve barrowed, and countless hours working away from their families, to lose everything they have.

People dying of covid aren’t the only people losing right now. No matter how much someone doesn’t want to face it, it’s a cost benefit analysis. The cost of what we’re doing to ourselves is incalculably high. The idea that those paying the highest price to “slow the spread” shouldn’t have a voice in this is what is cavalier.

It seems fair that by that logic, the people most at risk of dying should have a voice about opening up and letting the virus spread more widely.

There is no one spared from the pain of this pandemic. What seems cavalier is thinking that those aged 70 or so should be perfectly fine taking one for the team.

It is evident that the value of a life can be quite variable. Back when Obamacare was being debated the value of life for the elderly seemed quite high for those opposed to the new law. Now it is more clear that the value of a senior's life can go up or down, depending on circumstance.

Arguing that since a person has risked more in the market place, that their needs supersede other's is frankly a non starter with me. So their employees should cheerfully report for duty, knowing the risk of getting the virus is greatly increased?? They should not care that they may then spread it to a parent, grandparent or other person more at risk??
