As much as fitness goals should really be based on yourself and not concerned with what others are doing, I tend to find enjoyment and thus greater motivation when there’s some friendly competition involved. As such, I’m opening up a “time trial” of sorts on a front range hike that I use as a training hike (until the high country opens up this summer). If you’re a fellow front range Coloradan (or maybe just stopping by) post your GPS confirmed time on the Mt Morrison trail just outside of Morrison CO. I’ll come up with some end of summer prize that the winners (one winner for each weight class) can show off to all of hunttalk and the world.

This hike is chosen based on proximity and the fact that the duration will hopefully make it easier to do frequently. There are going to be two weight classes: light (20 lbs) and heavy (60 lbs), so include your weight in your entry. In the sake of fitness goals, I think multiple entries is fine, or you can update your post with your best time as it comes.

That being said, I will start things off with my first go today:

Pack weight: 20 lbs
Total time to summit: 1:03:13

The timer starts after passing the gate at the start of the trail:

And the timer stops after reaching the concrete pad on the summit:

This time trial does NOT include the decline, which has a couple scrambling sections that people could get hurt on if rushing. I’m hopeful this can be a fun way to get in better shape for the season, so stay safe, have fun, and enjoy the beautiful views!

We gonna break down the times by pack weight or what?

1s off per pound?

I’m in though.
I feel like we should pick a standard pack weight or maybe two: a heavy and a light weight and then have people target that weight, maybe?

I have a very similar hike near me that I like to do when trying to get in shape, but I don’t pack extra weight. I’ve always done round trip times, but my best time is similar to the one you just posted. And that was 8 years ago when I was preparing for a sheep hunt. I have posted some truly pathetic times since then! 😄 I might try yours if I get over to the Front Range and have some time.

My wife reallllly wanted to do that hike when we moved to the valley a few years back. Finally decided to take her one day. She hadn't done much hiking to that point and was very quickly humbled. Made it all the way though.

Can’t wait to give it a go! I’ll try to get an early training cycle time in soon and then a comparison/fast time in at the end of summer.

I like the light and heavy pack versions. #20/60 sounds good. (Wish I was a 250lb Viking of a man to make my pack feel lighter but it is what it is).

Updated the original post to include the two weight classes of #20 and #60, I think that's a good setup.

I'm excited to see how things shake out!

Those pictures bring back some memories. I did that hike a lot when I lived in Lakewood, but I’ll bet it’s been 8+ years since I last hiked it. Great challenge for those in the Denver area!
