2025 Garden!

Its February! Lets get this going. Post pictures of your garden, your garden plans, your dishes that you cook or whatever else you think might be garden related! I was off yesterday and I looked through my seed starting kit! I will be starting some seeds in the next couple of weeks like broccoli and cauliflower. Garlic, onions and potatoes will go straight in the ground as soon as possible, usually the first week of April. My Asparagus usually is harvested by the end of April just in time to get morels and wild turkey!

Mrs Brymoore and I held our garden planning meeting earlier in February. We went through what we want to plant, what needs started in the house, bought at the nursery and direct planted. We checked our seed box and ordered the necessary seeds.

We have two foot of snow on the garden. We’re in planning mode until March/April when we’ll start indoor plants.

This is our 20th year on this garden. We know what we like but refine a little each year. Add a new plant or two and remove a few.

My wife has ideas for her garden in her head, but is reluctant to put them to written and sketched design ... as she thinks the growing season will be over before the snow is gone!

Posted in last years thread, but since it took place this year I'll post here too. Fuyu persimmon and elberta peach got planted in the front yard, both seem to have taken the planting well. Garden beds are planted with snap peas, snow peas, carrots, and leaf lettuce. I also had some white potatoes with good eyes on them so I planted those in some 5 gallon buckets. Thankfully nothing is up yet as we are supposed to get 1-3" of snow tomorrow. Beds temp warm enough, even with this cold run we've had. Still making up my mind on what the garden will look like once the peas run their course.

Local nursery and garden supply. They always have a broad selection and there's some really knowledgeable people who work there.

Tractor supply, local garden center and big box stores (lowes, home depot, wallyworld).
They had rose bushes on the shelf in Tractor supply this week when I was getting bird seed. If the ground was thawed I'd have probably grabbed one or two.
Rural King has a pretty good selection of fruit trees in the spring, probably going to add a couple more apple trees this spring. Was admiring the buds on the peach, cherry, apple and pear trees this morning while walking the dog.
I'm ready for spring.

Hoss Tools, MIGardner, and Mary's heirloom seeds are my three go to choices for seeds. I'll get pictures Friday of what's coming up already for spring. I still need to order another tomato variety and a sweet corn variety.

I always watch our Wally World when they are closing out the garden center they usually have strawberries, blueberries and blackberries for >$5 a plant. I figure at that price I can afford to kill them.

Not many plans this year. Mrs Leroy and I are building, so hopefully we'll be moving in the near future. I did however buy five pounds of native wildflower seeds for our future back yard

I have 3 kids that go through jam like water so I need quantity. Last batch I bought 60ish plants from some random nursery. I think the variety I got was sequoia…

My wife does all the gardening...it is her happy place. I ran out and took this just now. It kind of wraps around the pigeon coop to the right.

My contribution is asking for raspberries and asparagus. We have both, but the asparagus took several years to get going.

You can see some turkeys roosting in the neighbor's trees.

I did an area, maybe a quarter of an acre, in wildflowers. Historically it had been crop field so I just did a combination of letting it go, planting plugs, seeding and controlling invasive. It was not pretty for the first couple of years but patience is a virtue and now I’m seeing reds, yellows, oranges and purple all from native plants. The best part is when I see pheasants coming and going! As my oak trees get bigger I’m going to transition the rest of my 5 acres into oak Savana. As that’s what it would have been historically.

Last time I bought strawberry plants the local 4-H was selling bare plants for cheap. Bought 20 of an early variety and 20 of a later variety for like $15 or $20 total if I remember right.

One of my good friends worked for SD GFP at one time and worked on a project where the end goal was an oak savanna, with a main focus of the project being whitetail and turkey habitat. Super cool project. I’ve had a few memorable turkey hunts watching toms work across an oak savanna into calls. My friend and I have joked around about somehow when we’re old men our children and grandchildren can cart our old asses out there to shoot a bird.

The state forest by us has been doing oak Savana restoration. When they are in full bloom it’s a pretty site to see. Unfortunately, by my house my kids and grandkids will have to enjoy it.
