Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

Woodworking Hunt Talkers?

A little bit of an unusual woodworking project. The campground I work at had a big red oak that started leaning towards a cabin and had to be cut down. I cut a cookie of the butt and mounted it so the growth rings could be seen. I labeled when a few important events took place throughout the tree's 128 year life. Sometimes I get desperate to put my forestry degree to use.View attachment 172742

I love this. Gotta keep those forestry degrees from getting dusty.

Some nice work being done. I'm currently ship lapping and wiring my garage. My cousin cuts the boards on his mill, then I dry cut them and needed.

Used wood equipment is crazy high right now.. trying to get my hands on a used 3 hp shaper, but .. yeah.. maybe next year prices will get better.

That is one sweet boat, Carnage. What sort of wood is that?

I'd love to use that as my go to duck boat!

What is the piece in the bow all about? And explain those chairs.

You guys do not lack for creativity! (and serious skills)

Most of that is zebra wood. We stained the outside with a mahogany to make it pop with the reddish color.
The green colors on the lean bars are copper. We made the lean bars out of a plywood and then vacuum sealed the copper onto it and used resin to seal them. A lot of resin!

The storage compartments under the seats are also copper.
Gunnels and seats are Ash. The gunnels are tricky because they need to bend, but also be strong enough to help with the integrity of the boat. We used a steamer to heat them and then bend them.

Jesus was a "carpenter"! I'm just a "wood butcher"! LOL!

Youngest bought a house that had a 2 room shack in the back yard. Way too small and far gone to refurbish, so down it came.
There was quite a bit of shiplap and about a dozen rough cut, unfinished 2"×6"×18' used as lath for the cedar shingles.
Needing something to keep me busy, I stumbled into some sliding barn door hardware and thought about the shiplap!

This is the view from the den.

Since we're talking "handmade" and "noise makers", thought I'd throw these in the mix.16174640894017358373458384475812.jpg
They are "wingbone yelpers" made from the wing bones of turkeys I've taken.
...and "Yes!", several birds I've taken I've called in with other "yelpers" I've made.

There are some seriously talented folks on here. During the winter I like to piddle around with making stuff like this. I've built 8 or 10 longrifles so this was a jump from the norm with the box and everything. Fun project though.

My first picture frame. Black cherry from my dad's shop in PA years ago. I've been moving it around the West for a long time pondering the right project. I finally found one.

Very nice. That stuff is tricky to work with, especially in the router. The sugar sap plugs up blades and smokes the wood.

I'm pretty stoked on how my new staircase is taking shape, especially the handrail, the temporary stair treads will come out soon and my pretty maple ones will match the railing after sanding and oil...then to finish the awful job of chipping out the rest of the floor tile so I can install the wood floor.
