What's your elk rifle and cartridge?

I took my first two cows with a T/C Venture 7mm-08 using 140 grain particians. Both taken at about 160 yards broadside. I have passed up on two rear quartering shots at 225 and 250 yards on bulls because I didn't have faith in the punch of that combo. This was also my first big game rifle and wanted something low recoil.

So now I bumped up to a Browning Xbolt 300 Win Mag.. cause I am a recoil wuss! Shooting Barnes Ttsx in 165 which has nearly as good ballistics as the ttsx 180g out to 400 yards (out to 500 the 180 is significantly better). I swear the better pad plus muzzle brake have the recoil feeling less than my 7mm-08, and I'd take that quartering shot on a bull every day with the win mag.

This year will be a 6.5 gap built on a Remington 700, shilen select match #3 contour 1-8”, trigger tech trigger, sitting in a bell and Carlson mountain rifle stock with a leupold vx5hd sitting on top.

Nice grouping I think you got me. As mentioned my gun isn't much. Stock trigger, worked, custom muzzle break, pillared, bedded and floated.

Who screwed that one together? .081 freebore? What brass you running? That’s some good speed with 4831 also. I run H1000 currently in mine with a 140 hybrid at 3040. Sure is a fun cartridge!

Shared this picture on a previous thread of one of my elk killers. 280 mtn rifle I've owned for the last 25 years but gave a facelift to a couple years back. Realize I like killing elk and enjoy using different weapons. I've killed them with a 6mm Rem, 243 Win 20171018_134920.jpg 280 Rem, 350 Rem, 54 cal muzzle loader and various bows over the years. Looking forward to this fall as I just purchased a new bow and a 28 nosler!

1st Elk model 742 Remington 30-06, next few pre-64 Winchester model 70 in a 270, 3 with a Rugger 243, 1 with a 30 Gibbs made off Springfield, several with Smith Wesson model 1500 deluxe in 300 win mag, 2 with a 30-06 made off an old spring field, 3 with a 25-06 sako, several with model 700 Remington 7mm mag , 1 with a 257 Roberts. I think that's all

I use a few, but the only one I have a partial pic of is this one. JP Enterprises LRP 07M, 18" barrel.

Non pictured ones I use are my Ruger 77, and my .300WM build in progress.

Like I stated earlier in this post, I use various rifles. It all depends on what rifles I am playing around with. I guess that I have been looking for that "ONE" rifle that checks all the boxes for me.

Here are a few that from the last few years.

102902

2014: T/C encore with custom Match Grade Machine 25" 7x57AI barrel, Zeiss 3x9 shooting 154gr Hornady Interbonds at 2,890fps.

102903

2015: T/C Encore with 26" Custom Shop 7mm RM barrel, Sightron Bigsky 4.5-14AO, 175gr Nosler partitions at 2,870fps

102904

2016: Custom Winchester Mdl 70 7mm RM 26" barrel, Leupold VX-III 4.5-14AO, 160gr Failsafe at 3,040fps

102905

2017: Older gen Kimber 84L Montana 24" barrel 280AI, Leupold VX3 2.5-10 B&C. 160gr Nosler accubonds at 2,910fps. I really like this rifle! Light weight, bomb proof and extremely accurate. It is a keeper!!!(y)

C&C Gunworks our of Bowman,ND. I went with a. little longer freebore since I installed a Wyatt’s. I can get 3150 FPS with h1000 but h4831 was more accurate for me. It’s quickly becoming my favorite gun to shoot. Recoil is very mild

I do not have any pics on the computer will try and get some but I use Browning Hell's Canyon Long Range 300WinMag with Choice Ammo 200gr Nosler AB. I have a Leupold VX5HD 3.5-15x44 windplex. Really have enjoyed this gun. I also have a 300 WSM BLR that I shoot 180gr Nosler AB with that. I really enjoy that gun in the brush but just wanted some more consistent range. Definitely satisfied with the Hell's Canyon Long Range out west. Choice Ammo has treated me good as well.

I'm a little more of a bow hunter when it comes to elk, but mostly in the past I've used a .300WM.

The last couple years I've been trying to turn my Tikka T3X into something of an all purpose, lot's of mountain hiking sort of tool. Its a .308 topped with a Leupold 3x-9x VX-2 and last year my load was a 165gr Accubond with 42grns of H4895 pushing it down the tube. I hunted with that pretty exclusively last year but didn't get within striking distance of an elk I wanted to shoot. It did perform nicely on a big mulie deer at 310yds hough. I'm going to use the same set up next year but probably a different load. And I'm leaning toward 165gn Federal TBT's. I seem to be able t push them a little faster than ABs w/o losing accuracy.

Accurized Remington 300 WinMag LH Stainless with laminated stock and VX3 3.5-10 50mm, hand load 180gr Accubonds. My go to rifle. It outshoots me at under .5 MOA. If I knew it was going to get so much heavier as I got older I might have made a few changes early on but at this point in my hunting career things are unlikely to change (except for it continuing to weigh more each year).

Is it a left handed action, I have a RH action but LH laminated stock... wish someone would make a synthetic stock righ action LH stock, but no one does that I have seen.

Given the severely limited number of LH models out there I think I might have to go full custom if I ever have the money.

Montour County Rifles 7mm Dakota > stiller action, Bruxx barrel, Manners stock 180grn berger VLD Huskemaw scope 1-8 twist. Or the back up Browning medalion II 300 winmag 180 grn accubonds

Very nice setup! Mine will run faster also but accuracy started to open a bit. Recoil is very mild and almost non existent with a muzzlebrake.
What brass are you running?
