What's your elk rifle and cartridge?

I switch off between a Tikka T3 in .308 win. topped with a Leupold VX 3i 3.5 x 10 x 40 CDS and a Smith and Wesson 1500 rebored to .338 x 06 with a 2 x 7 Burris. The Tikka is set up for the Barnes TTSX 150 grain and the S & W likes the Barnes TSX 185 gr. bullets.

Have that exact Tikka t3x setup in SS. Currently using 168 nosler etips. Shot animals with 165 ABs.

My other gun is a rem 700 270 with a 4-12 redfield. Probably going to use nosler etips or ABs. Rifle prefers 140 or less.

Left handed Weatherby Mark V (West German) in .300 Weatherby. Zeiss Conquest 3.5X10X44 scope. Barnes 180 grain TSX with RL 22 powder.

I use either my Weatherby Vanguard s2 in 25-06 with a 115 Barnes TSX or a Browning BLR 308 with 168 Hornaday GMX. The Browning is iron sights and the Weatherby has a 6x18 Vortex

Since 1999, IIRC, I have used a Rem 700 BDL in 300 RUM. Currently shoot 180 gr Accubonds but have used partitions and Scirrocos in the past. So far 12 bulls, 15 cows, 10 MD bucks, 8 pronghorn, 3 whitetails, 2 black bears, 1 shiras moose, 1 AK/YK moose, 1 mnt caribou, 1 dall sheep and 1 javelina have been unhappy with its performance.

Ain't she pretty? This was the first bull I took with this gun.

When I was in NWT on a sheep hunt as I was walking to the range to check zero, the barely 18 yo guide asked "what kind of gun you got". I told him "Rem 700 300RUM". He said "no, what's it made out of". I told him "wood". He responded with " I think my dad has one like that".

300 H & H with either 180 or 200 ( have used both ) in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico
6.5 x 55 with 156 Norma in Sweden

However the Elk in Sweden look a lot like Moose (-;

28 Nosler custom shooting 195EOL. Might be the last gun I build. Ok probably not.

Accurized Remington 300 WinMag LH Stainless with laminated stock and VX3 3.5-10 50mm, hand load 180gr Accubonds. My go to rifle. It outshoots me at under .5 MOA. If I knew it was going to get so much heavier as I got older I might have made a few changes early on but at this point in my hunting career things are unlikely to change (except for it continuing to weigh more each year).

Could always put it in a lighter weight stock. Most laminate stocks are pretty heavy.

This one followed me home from a pawn shop, w bare wood stock, in about 1992. It is an Interarms Mark X commercial Mauser 98, in 7mm Rem mag. Along the way it got a Timney trigger and glass bedding.

Here is another view.

Its homely little brother is this Stevens 200 in 270 Win. It also got a Timney, so both feel the same to my unrefined trigger finger. It kills elk pretty much the same.

The trajectory of big bro w 160 gr bullets is the same as lil bro shooting 140 grains. @ least to around 400 yd, which is as far as I care to reach.

25 year old Rem 700 BDL in 30-06 shooting 168gr Barnes TTSX hand loads at about 2700fps. Sitting in the original plastic stock, wearing a new Leupold VX3i 3.5-10x40.

The plan is to put it in an Edge stock and then spin on a Proof Research barrel, staying with the 30-06, or possibly going to 280AI.

Mthntr,

1-8 twist 3R, factory duplicate the barrel profile (about a #1 contour)...add one inch to finish at 23".

Try to treat this barrel better than the original, which shot very well. Used it for shooting gophers and had the barrel hot enough to light a marlboro off it several times.

I reckon I've got no fewer than 8 thousand rounds through it and surprised it didn't start throwing fliers before it did considering how I treated it.
Shoulda went 1-7. Still shoot everything you have, and the long monos if you go that way sometime. mtmuley

Browning Hells Canyon Speed in 7rem mag. I used factory 140gr Barnes TTSX last fall, I’m hoping to get a handload developed using the 139gr LRX. If that doesn’t work I’ll probably try out some Hammers.
