Earlier this year I asked for some info on this unit and I just wanted thank those who gave advice. You see lots of people asking for info on a hunt/unit, but u seldom see the follow up and hear how the hunt actually went. So here's a little bit about my hunt in 52. I drew the 1-14th archery tag and chose to hunt the second week hoping for more rutting action. The bulls were pretty quiet, but they made enough noise to figure out what they were doing. I decided getting a few miles in on horses was how I wanted to approach this hunt due to a fairly high number of tags, and much of the unit having road access. I won't say exactly where I hunted, but anyone familiar with the unit knows there aren't many places to get more than 2 miles from a road. And I was. I was only hunting a day and a half before I killed my bull. He was pushing around a group of approximately 25 cows late on the second afternoon in a small meadow, and I simply snuck within range of the herd and never made a single call. I saw alot of elk in the short time I hunted the area. And it was so nice to hunt some terrain that was fairly open and not insanely steep like the OTC areas I'm used to hunting in Colorado. Hopefully I can get lucky and pull another new Mexico tag next yr! Here's a few pics. And if anyone has a tag and is looking for specific info on this unit, send me a message and I'll try to help. Good luck the rest of the fall!
