The Rinella Effect

Enjoyed the recent one on Mountain Mensssssssssssssssss.LOL
I got some of my grandpa's letters.
Quick family history told to my aunt & uncle, dictated.
One page was Great Great Great Grandpa Henry.

1820. He had left the family in Conn. and went west.
Wound up trapping in South Colorado and Northern NM.
Ended up in a claim town with a lumber mill and a partner who ran the saloon.
He had a native wife and they sold out to his partner and headed back to Conn.
Adolf Coors was the partner and the wife died of "the fever" on the way.

I wish I could ask him one last question, still.

Carry on.

I’m familiar with Bowmar and MF and their shenanigans, but what’s the story with RMEF and ONX? Have a link to a story? I try to be pretty well informed- I try to be careful with who gets my hard-earned money.

RMEF paid for Jason Matzinger (spelling?) to hunt a private ranch in eastern Montana a few years back for publicity. I can spend some time digging up proof, try looking for yourself first. If you can’t find it I’ll do it.

Same with onX, read up on this by googling OnX hypocrisy rokslide. I won’t post the link because it’s probably forbidden.

My dad never left me behind as a kid, and I’m sure I severely cramped his style on some of our trips with his buddies looking back on it now.

He’s the only one that will get 100% accurate info 100% of the time.
Thank you for your concern but considering we went fishing a few days later and I took him to a spot that we both got our limits I don’t think he will hold a grudge.

I’ll tell you what makes him mad though, when I text him the cell phone video I shot of him missing an elk in a high mountain meadow that I killed an elk in 3 days before and led him up to because I knew there was more elk coming out there.

@R.K.

You can call RMEF’s accountant (CFO) Shane Cronk and he will tell you they paid Matzinger for making the film on a piece of land he leases. I’d imagine that isn’t the first time these conservation orgs do this.

Jason has leased that ranch for years. Long before the RMEF film. They didn’t pay for him to hunt a private ranch. They paid for his time and filmmaking abilities. I’m not a Matzinger fan by any stretch but this faux outrage is dumb as hell.

Edit to add: I didn’t see your last response until I had posted this.

Thank you for that interesting read and reminding me to cancel OnX prior to subscription renewal next month. I was going to drop OnX this year because it’s become shitty. A few years back OnX connectivity even offline was superb and useful new updates were regularly rolling out. Now I find it tracks poorly and the updates aren’t better.
Dozen years back I used Gaia and still have it today because it works. This year I’ll buy BaseMap too because my experience so far with free BaseMap has gone well.

Any of you guys try the guys at Hunt Backcountry, makers of EXO packs? They don't blow up spots, accept gear sponsors, and recently they expressly denied the notion of ever selling out to holding companies (unlike the Yeti/Mystrey Ranch as the latest).

I've been listening to them for about three years now and I don't recall them ever blowing up spots.

The edge they gain is they can freely talk about gear that really works, how and why it works. Sure, they will have companies come on to talk about their products, but EXO won't sell out. To me that is so meaningful.

Their podcasts are great since they bring on regular joe's; from those who have hunted all their lives, adult onset hunters, and those that are in their first season. So much is gained from candid reflections on their hunts: you gain from mistakes, successes, and character that builds from all of that.

I’ve wanted to like their podcast but for some reason it just doesn’t capture me at all. I like their model and business approach, but they are just boring to me.

You’re not wrong about him leasing it for years.

However, if you called RMEF they will tell you they funded the lease for that hunt as a business expense.

The specifics don’t really make a difference in whether they paid him to make a film or they bought him an elk hunt. None of which benefit the average hunter who donates to RMEF.

I agree, that there is a dull, NPR-like tone. Admittedly, this was an acquired taste for me. Like the earlier commenters on this thread, I've grown weary of the entertainment-heavy podcasts and shows. I now value dull, spartan information that's unadulterated with gear sponsors.

The information shared on there is very boring to most, such as a long discussion on boot selection; Speck isn't trying to sell anything, but disclose his experience on boots and why he chooses certain materials over others, too much support, not enough support, waterproof liner construction, etc.

However, I spend a very focused amount of time in the backcountry once a year. The vast morsels of information that took someone many seasons and multiple trips per season, it helps me intensify the experience I have in the backcountry. All the better knowing that I don't have to worry about what product they are getting paid to push.
