I don't hunt with anybody...it's easier that way.

When you jump bull elk in the timber you don't have much time. I'm smart enough to know where my barrel is pointing and in full control of the rifle. If you're not, you need to take a weapons course.
There’s always that chance one’s gonna get away, because I’m fumbling around with my gun. Unlikely to be one of the top 1,143 things that actually matters.

Even when I’m in a situation anymore where I have one in the chamber I seem to find myself not totally closing the bolt all the way. Not sure why but I just don’t something won’t happen and it takes a bout a half second to close my bolt

Carrying live IMO depends on your circumstances. We all make all types of decisions based upon a situational difficulty. This is no different to me. If situation dictates ok, I carry live. If not, I go empty. I just don't think there is an all in either way.

I am in complete agreement that weapons strapped to a pack or slung on a shoulder should be unloaded. Basically anytime its not in your hand. But when actively hunting an animal (still hunting whitetail or tracking a bull in dark timber) when are you guys loading your rifle? Only once you've seen an animal you want to take?

I was actually taught to decock my bolt with one in the chamber. Yes, I know the firing pin protrudes out the front of the bolt and rests on the primer. Last time I mentioned that I got roasted worse than the guys carrying ready to go....

Most the time if I’m rifle hunting gun is covered and attached to my pack. If it’s of my pack I load a round but don’t close the bolt. It usually doesn’t stay that way very long and that round is heading down range. I know a guy that blew the back window out of his truck last season. Things happen I prefer to avoid as much of that as possible

Ironically isn’t that the scene where Tuco’s gun is unloaded.

There are two kinds of people in this world: those with loaded pistols, and those who dig.

Time and place dependant, out West deer hunting I hunt all day with 3 in the mag and an empty chamber. Being able to see hundreds, if not thousands of yards is a whole different game from back East where a deer can appear at 40 yards.
Gun season in the East, chamber is hot from sun up to sun down. I do much of my whitetail hunting with lever guns with no safety at half @#)(#. Gun is always unloaded when crossing a fence, creek, climbing a stand, in a vehicle, etc.
Everyone is free to choose his/her level of comfort with a hot chamber, doesn't seem like opinions are being changed here. Gun safety commandments are there for a reason, doesn't say anywhere in there that guns shouldn't be loaded. However, sadly some people shouldn't be trusted with any gun, loaded or not.

How many of us are willing to admit forgetting to load a round when it comes time to actually shoot?

This old flinch of mine is mighty noticeable on an empty chamber.
That's what I'm afraid of this fall since I'm not used to hunting unloaded. I'm going to do whatever my companions prefer but I sure hope I can remember to load if the time comes!

I changed my vote from yes to no in the interest of lowering the collective blood pressure of people on this forum. I won't change how I hunt. Kind of nice to be able to change your vote.

Lol. This did turn into more of a fight between the sides than I had hoped for. What I really wanted was people from both sides just explaining what makes them feel unsafe about having one in the chamber or explaining the precautions they take that they feel mitigate the danger enough that they feel and empty chamber is unnecessary.

I maybe should have clarified a little better at the beginning that my personal stance on this only involves when I have control of the rifle(in hand or a normal shoulder sling) and definitely not when the rifle is packed away on your pack.

PS for anyone with extra time and energy to fight and argue here head over here and let's put that energy to better use.

Yep. I’ve clicked a time or two. Quick rack and boom.

If it was a long shot, I probably dry fired a few times anyways.
