I never thought this format would work but it does, perhaps because I can relate to the conversation. Today I picked up my F&S magazine and after looking at another cover of a whitetail buck I just rolled my eyes. I'm thinking, back in the good old days they did a study and found the best selling covers had a ferocious bear on it. Open mouth, saliva dripping off the teeth stuff. Bears were manly. Now it is these farmed whitetail bucks. And Viagra ads.

Anyway, I just got to the part where Steve is talking about how now big buck covers are selling the most mags. Made me smile, just like the comment the other day about how getting a goose used to be a big deal. They remind me of all the stories that make up my past.

'skrats. I would check and reset the trapline after basketball practice. Was a fun activity but when the wind was howling and temps were bouncing around zero then I would never stay warm. My coat was Army surplus since had lots of pockets for tie down wires, etc.

My little town in MO had two fur buyers drop by weekly during season. That competition helped keep the prices close to auction values. I used to value fur I was catching in six-packs of Miller beer. I still have a shotgun I bought with some of the fur money. I couple of years ago was back on the farm visiting and found some of the traps still handing in the barn rafters along with some of the plywood stretching boards we cut with jigsaws for 'skrats and mink before bought some of the wire frame stretchers. Good times.

Probably my favorite Meateater podcast thus far.

I loved the discussion of elk needs vs time of year. Rinella asked the same questions I would've asked too (how big an area, habitat, every year, etc)

The trapping discussion was good as well and kind of makes me feel like I need to give trapping a whirl one time before I die.

These podcasts are motivating. Is it September yet?
