MT proposed season changes

I think deer hunting in MT is great, something for everybody no doubt. Bambi's right on the money. But you can't let a place go to the point of 3 bucks per 100 does without some kind of restrictions. Fortunately, there's a lot of MT without that problem, plenty of places to go, plenty of deer, and pretty good hunting. I was being a wise-ass just because most people that want to create some restrictions to allow for older deer are hypcritical in what they do during hunting season, as a hunter or an outfitter.

I was being a wise-ass.

What's new? That is 24/7 365 days a year if I am not mistaken:p.

Micro-managing in my opinion would be a start. What would work in say Bozeman might not work so hot in Miles City or Broadus or vice versa. I don't think that it is rocket science just a little time consuming and an added expense for the FWP.

Right on Bambi. I like my 11 weeks also. And if we make some units better by going to a draw, other units are going to suffer because of increased pressure.

Um...i didn't shoot a deer in MT which means i didn't have enough weeks........I think it should be Open till Christmas:)LMAO

JOKE........by mid season, i actually can't wait for thanksgiving to get overwith.

I will note though that after talking with some folks in NE Montana, the restrictions up there seem to be helping some of the buck populations. One guy in particular has seen and killed bigger bucks in the area now than he has the past 10 years.............for whatever thats worth.

I think they should put a 4 point or better minimum on all deer hunting in MT. Granted many a small four point would still get smoked but at least they had the chance to get bigger...................you want to hunt for meat, go shoot a bunch of frickin does. Geezuz, you can buy 7 damn doe tags in MT:):)

Just got off the phone with a friend who is mostly a rifle bear hunter, and he has a question about the increase in archery seasons for bear.

He hunts units that have limited quotas for fall and spring bears. In the last few years, the fall quota has been filled by archers before the rifle season even opens.

Does anyone know if these increased archery bear seasons will be subject to their own sub-quota, or will the entire quotas be allowed to be filled by archers before the rifle hunters can go afield?

I cannot find such in these proposals.

I want to say they have something like a ten percent of quota cap for each unit, but I'm not sure.
How has the season been filled by archers before rifle season opens? There is no archery bear season currently.

Not sure Randy. Maybe I misunderstood when he said that the quotas are already filled by the time he hits the hills in late October. Maybe it is from rifle hunters who are out in September, etc. Probably a misunderstanding on my part.

His point was that quotas are filling early (before the hides are prime), and he wanted to know if the increased archery bear opportunity will be subject to a sub-quota for these archery seasons.

I do not see anything where its says that.

You're right, it says any killed will be applied to the quota, but doesn't specify a subquota.
I really wouldn't think they kill would be substantial in this short season, there will definitely still be way more killed right after the rifle season opens on the 15th.

The ten percent I was thinking of is actually twenty percent, and applies to the mountain lion quotas.

So now that the comment period is closed, when do we hear anything?
Just have to wait until the regulations come up online?

March 11, the commission will meet to make the final decision on tentatives. Me thinks opportunity in the Root will be diminished slightly. Even the districts right over the top, in the Hole, will see fewer opportunities. Some area's will see better ops, so it might balance out. The Deerlodge valley, for example is way up on elk numbers.

My date was for falconry not the tentatives here's the final decision date for these seasons:

February 11 Thursday Helena Final License and Permit Allocation Process for Deer, Elk, and Antelope

Funny thing is I hunted an area over there where the numbers are over objective, and I've ran into elk before, and never saw a single elk this season. Went back to my normal area where the numbers are 20% of normal, and started running into elk the first day. Go figure

What do you guys think of the three day walk in only rule on WMA's?
I'd love if it goes through.

What is it? I haven't read anything on it yet.

Hmm fwp's site seems to be down, was going to give you a link.
They're proposing a change to open up a special 3 day season prior to the traditional May 15th opener, where access would be open only to foot travel. They're trying to figure out a way to reduce the mayhem from shedhunters on the opener. Know it would affect Boyd Mountain and the Blacktail, and possibly the Sun River game range?
