Montana General Season Structure Proposal

I’m more cynical about how much they care. They seem reluctant to act and after listening to hours and hours of the citizen advisory committee meetings it’s apparent that they aren’t interested in doing much different, have no accurate data, don’t value the public input, and are not genuinely interested in producing a mule deer population that has a better age class potential. -

Never mind. I’m just going back down the same path. Beat this dead horse way too many times already.
Hopefully the assurance that they care leads to change….

You weren’t reassured by my carefully crafted nonsense?

Where is the Mule Deer Citizen Advisory Council? Any ideas from them? Eric is on both.
The CAC was not tasked with making recommendations on changing management. That part is up to FWP. Developing a problem statement and guiding principles was as far as we were allowed to go. Many of us were chopping at the bit to go farther.

We just came back from three days in region 7. We had a great time. Saw a lot of muley does and a few bucks. Lots of turkeys. But two things really stood out. First was the number of coyotes. Just wow. If it wasn't a four and a half hour drive then I'd be back this winter for some hides. Second were the hunters. We were literally the only one with Montana plates. Interestingly, most were from Wisconsin. You guys are right. Lots of out of staters.

there are some biologist that have data that shows lower buck to doe numbers will actually increase the herd numbers. Are any from the group that was on the podcast the other day biologist or just hunters in a bar figuring out the montanas deer issues? Seams like some of the proposals are going nuclear no doe harvest is what should be started as a minimum

the link posted above with the guy harvesting 3 doe is montanas biggest mule deer issue can't kill a ton of does and expect good deer numbers

Looks like nonresidents are harvesting about 29% of the bull elk in region 3 per fwp data.

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. In the case of deer/elk management Montanans have yielded their collective power to greater powers that favors outfitters and large landowners whether it be the dominant party in the Legislature, FWP chosen by and managed by Gov GG. And a Commission that also was chosen to exclude sportsmen representation. Don't believe any of those actions were an oversight.

So now some sportsmen think there is reason for change. They have some commendable suggestions, but most other sportsmen would, for whatever reasons either reject change or don't like the changes proposed. So Sportsmen will remain divided and therefore lessen any residual power they may have.

I'm not holding my breath that anything substantial will take place during my remaining time on this planet that doesn't favor large landowners, outfitters or the revenue stream of FWP.

It will take non resident tags going unsold for anything substantial to happen. And there are many people in line waiting for their chance at the Montana forky
