I have always considered The Grizzly Bar in Roscoe to be the best spot in the state.
That said, I’ve never been the The Edgar Bar.

Theres a new contender. On the Rocks in Worden, about 25 miles east of Billings.
Get the Ribeye.

The only place I think I’ve been to that’s better is The Star in Elko.
Thats including some very nice places in Scottsdale, Vegas and San Diego.

What’s on your list?
 
Lolo Creek Steakhouse, the couple times I have been there, is legit.

If you ask 20 people from Helena, MT what the best steak in the area is, I bet a large portion would say the Windsor, in Boulder. If you asked 20 from Jefferson County, 15+ would say the Windsor. The Windsor, for both a legitimately great steak and an atmosphere-endangered, is my tops.

The steaks are cut and purchased locally every day, and they sell out when gone through. When they’re out of ribeyes sourced from the Boulder Valley- they're out for the night.

The cook is also the bartender, and your steak will be cooked at the bar by a goddamn artist - capable of serving beers to a dozen of the local wild and wooly, all while cooking a half a dozen steaks to order, and right.

Also, if you order a pasty, they make the gravy fresh for every single one. That has nothing to do with steak I know, but it seems important.

I’m there both too often and not enough.

land of Magic, oasis, bison ribeye from Ted’s, Stacy’s in a nice spot. Lots of good ones around Bozeman.

My favorite spot all time is 5th street steak house in Chico, CA. Really consistent on quality and they had the ribeye dialed in IMO. I’m excited to get a list of some new spots to try
 
Ted’s in Bozeman has been consistently disappointing for me. Not MT, but best steaks I’ve had consistently has been Shanahan’s in south Denver.

We did this on Fridays and Saturdays in my hometown. It got so popular tho we ended up having to be a 2 man crew to keep up. Bruce was an artist with the ribeye so he did the cooking and I slinged the drinks. Town of less than a thousand and a hole in the wall tavern. Always the best places!! We also did the Best burgers outside of the ramshead on the salmon river I have ever eaten.
 
The derby in butte is probably the best one I’ve ever had. Edgar is a pretty good steak. The chop house has really gone down hill here
 
Finally a useful montana topic that aint all bitching! I dont have a single place that i have ate a steak in wy/mt/id that stands out all. The good places are on par with each other, know to never eat at anything with chop in its name. If we see a clear winner in this thread might have to take a drive and see for myself!

My best steak ever: some fancy place i dont even know name on a main road in Lima Peru, holy sh@t what a ribeye and the fixings were so good!
My best american steak: craft steak in vegas, they cook a bigger steak for 2 to share with my wife and wow! We both remarked that might be best thing i had ever had in my mouth(jokes followed) but this was before i had that south american steak.
 
To have the best steak, you'll have to come a couple hundred miles north to Alberta 👀
 
I don't wanna derail this educational and important thread, but what if not gravy, do you put on your pasty?
Normally nothing at all but some do add ketchup.....some.

As you say don't want to derail the thread, I never had a bad steak in the ribnchop house in Livingston but the last time was 2018 so things might have changed?
 
Guard and Grace in Denver was just added to top 100 worlds best steaks list.

I'm partial to Blackbelly Market and Restaurant in Boulder.

Bella's in Saratoga, Wy makes a mean T-Bone when they have em available for special.

And even after all that, some top tier prime grade 45-60 day dry aged beef, I still absolutely love a night at out at Texas Roadhouse.
 
I've become disillusioned with steaks that can be ordered already cooked. The best beef is purchased in large quantities, from someone you know, who took the time to raise, finish and process the animal correctly.

So, the best beef I've ever had in Montana was a 1/2 beef I got on a trade. Grass raised, grain finished Charlais cow, about 3 years old, IIRC.

Second best was a steer out of Wyoming named Fat Boy. He was a sweet cow, but a much better steak. He was raised on the banks of the Wind River, finished off for a few weeks on corn, and cut up on the ranch.

Although, @Nameless Range's spot sounds about right for quality. Barkeep needs to have about a 3" long ash on a Malboro Red though, to be authentic.
 
Land of Magic Ribeye in Logan, MT.

I've had their prime rib as well and it is no where near the same level.
