To be fair that cheap semi auto took 20 years of abuse before it broke on me but I agree I don't want to spend money on something "disposable".Cheap O/U’s are worse than cheap semi autos and you’ve already learned a hard lesson there.
If you have a hard budget of $1K buy a quality used semi auto like an A400, M2, etc.
If you can spend a little more and are set on a O/U look for a used 686 or Citori. Those are the “cheap” O/U’s worth owning keeping in mind that a really good nice one can cost as much as a nice used truck or even a house.
