PEAX Equipment

P_ham does it again.

Oh please let that be so
Just guessin.. A couple 25" 6.5 SAUMs pushed berger 135s 3100+ without issue for me with h1000. A higher energy powder would have done more. I gotta think case capacity is somewhere between a 6.5 prc and SAUM case on an 06AI and bore diameter is only 0.007 off so I'd think you should be right there.

I’ve pushed the 133 berger to ~3050 fps in the regular 25-06 using Retumbo and RL 26 (1:7.5). I’d think 3150 or more is quite possible

Proof Sendero 7.5tw
MBM Baby Beast brake
AG Composites Alpine Hunter
Defiance Anti X
Triggertech Primary
Hawkins Oberndorf bottom metal
Leupold VX5HD 3-15x44
Titanium Cerakote for the barreled action and bottom metal
KG Gunkote Nano for the bolt

Bedded action, pillars are standard with AG.

I'm looking forward to seeing some load development out of this rifle, Jeff.
That’s a list of great parts put together by an awesome gunsmith! I’m sure it will keep shooting most everything in small groups.

What's the weight on that Rig?

I have Retumbo and would love to see RL26 but it’s been unobtanium in my area last few years. Still forming cases but plan to start with 7828 then h1000.

I had the same thoughts when putting this rig together. Trying not to set expectations too high early considering broader bullet cross sections seem to push equivalent weight bullets faster. But, you raise a good point - .007 isn’t that much real estate..

Ok. Have finished load development. Here are the main bullets and thoughts for those it can help or interested.

Found two good loads each shooting better that I can. .25 to .35” three shot groups.

I’ll dig up some picks and post later.

Load 1 is H1000 with CCI LR Primer, 133 gr berger. 3180 fps.

Load 2 is N570, Fed 215GM, same pill at 3200. No pressure signs.

My shaping thoughts on load development were to standardize on the Berger 133 gr and find a powder combo that hit at 3100 fps and would group. I have Retumbo and thought I’d start there then realized I’d have a tough time finding more later so started with other powders I have and are generally available online.

Although not easily available now, I started with IMR 7828 as have several pounds for a gun I gave my nephew. Did pressure/velocity tests +0.5gr increments. Flat primers at lower speeds than I wanted. Did a group test and was little over 1/2” so moved on.

Moved to Ramshot LR. Hit higher speeds >3200 but I didn’t like how jumpy speeds were as I increased. Seemed to indicate narrow band for groups.

H1000 shot well out of the gate. And I stopped before I could detect pressure at speed in load 1 above.

N570 was new to me and has been great. First pressure test with LR primers seemed to max out around 3250 fps. Primers were flatish but no other sign of pressure. When I got home, I noticed the higher charge cases of N570 case head were tight/barely fit into shell holder. Uh oh. Measured with my calipers and realized they grew with increased charges nearing the top end.

I called Paul and talked about measuring case head expansion as a test. Bought a micrometer, backed off the charges and measure H1000 and N570 loads before and after for each case head.

Another note, I swapped from LR to LRM primers for N570 loads as charge was over 60 grains.

Started shooting groups on 3/10 increments for each powder to find a stable spot. Landed on two loads very close to same velocity, no significant pressure or case head growth and nearly same point of impact at 100yds.

I’m 200 rounds into the barrel. 100 fire forming and another messing around.

Took it out today and confirmed velocities at 100. Loaded up JBM ballistics solution and dialed first round hit at 690 yards on 6” steel. No wind.

I couldn’t be happier with the gun, Paul’s work or the cartridge. The 25-06 AI with 133gr bullets at 3180 or 3200 is an absolute laser. With the long barrel and break, I can spot impacts.

Now I’ll start field position shooting w/o the break and see how it goes.

Definitely recommend Paul and his work. When the honeymoon on this new rifle wears off - I’ll definitely ask Paul to help build my next rifle . Maybe a fast twist 22-250 for heavier bullets?

Jeff

Nice! N570 and h1000 are both great powders and have been readily available lately. 133’s are great bullets and that’s a sweet looking gun. Great components, same ones I’ve used on several builds. 25-06 is such a cool cartridge.
