Low/mid grade over under

Recently picked up a Mossberg Gold Reserve in 20 gauge. It’s the first O/U I have ever owned. Very happy with it so far. Shot old doubles since I was a kid and always wanted an O/U.
It’s slender and light weight. A lot of the others I handled in the store seemed bulky.
The 2k plus guns handle/feel amazing but More than I want to spend on a hunting shotgun. And to shoot a little skeet.

Lots of Weatherby Orion's on Gunbroker for well under $1000. That's what I would get if my Weatherby Regency were to be retired.

One thing in favor of Weatherby Orion by Miroku; I suspect Weatherby would still fix them (you might call). I had a trigger go bad and they fixed it for minimal cost.

Cheap O/U’s are worse than cheap semi autos and you’ve already learned a hard lesson there.

If you have a hard budget of $1K buy a quality used semi auto like an A400, M2, etc.

If you can spend a little more and are set on a O/U look for a used 686 or Citori. Those are the “cheap” O/U’s worth owning keeping in mind that a really good nice one can cost as much as a nice used truck or even a house.

To be fair that cheap semi auto took 20 years of abuse before it broke on me but I agree I don't want to spend money on something "disposable".

I would add SKB and Ithaca (made by SKB) to the mix. Quality Japanese made O/U that can often be found reasonably.

CZ Upland ultralight. Weighs 6lbs and I love it.
^^^ Agree. After carrying my old Remington autoloader around for a season looking for grouse, I wanted a lighter gun. The Upland Ultralight is working well and easy to carry. No problems so far, and CZ USA has a good warranty and service if you need it.
