Typically not very long depending on how much effort you put in, it all comes down to time in the field and time e-scouting/understanding what elk habitat looks like. Once you understand where elk are likely to be it will just be a matter of checking areas you know that frequently hold elk. I have never been on an elk hunt and not had an opportunity to harvest.

This will be year 9 for us hunting the same unit and after every season I learn something new after thinking I have it figured

No, I’m messin around.. I’ve gone to spots over and over for years and still don’t find elk consistently. I love going to new spots so there’s not a whole ton of them that I’ve been to enough to learn it in depth. I wish I could!

I always worry that I am not looking for a needle in a haystack; if there is, in fact, no needle in the stack at all.

Yes, be able to kill a bull consistently year in and year out. Each year I have pulled a bull tag, and have bumped into bulls but have not been able to out the pieces together.

IME, if a person gets too one dimensional even in spots you know well, it's not good.

Going back to the same well will bite you eventually.

Things constantly change. Places I could kill elk just about anytime I wanted to have dried up for various reasons. But I've kept moving and finding new places.

Right, I've hunted the same general areas for a long time, but the spots on the spot have changed.

One place I've shot a half dozen bulls in a small area isn't worth a chit anymore due to massive blow down. The elk flat don't use it anymore, total waste of time to hunt it now.

Hunting and fishing on memories doesn't work all the time.

Till it doesn’t I hunt same unit stay mobile have spots in that unit if I stayed in the same drainage id have a rough time
