Hey folks I got a question about the 7mm family of bullets. So I seen a rather interesting gun I think would be cool plus it's only about 300$ and it's a argentine mauser and it's chambered for 7.65x53mm and I think I say it to much but I shoot a 7mm-08 and it's my first and my favorite deer rifle and so I was just wondering a few things 1 being are they both in the 7mm family since they both start with 7? Also is the 7.65 bigger then the 7mm-08? Also right now my 7mm-08 is set up for more close range but could I set the 7.62 up for more farther range(500 to 700 yards) or is that to much. Thanks for any help I'm just kinda interested in the 7.65x53mm

7.65 = .312 (303 Caliber) diameter bullet
7mm = .284 diameter bullet

As for long range...no the old cartridge is not going to outperform the 7mm08. The loaded ammo is anemic at best for the 7.65. Will it do it? yes but it's not going to be better than the 7mm08

If you don't reload then I'd stay away from the Mauser unless you want to blast some old Mil-Spec surplus ammo. If you want to spend $300 make sure you have a better scope on your 7mm08 and be proficient with it

I do agree on buying a better scope for the 7mm-08 but say I did reload( I don't and i would most likely blow a gun up) but say I did what would the stats be on it then?

That actually was really helpful thanks so it's pretty much a 303 brit but wasn't the 303 like the 8mm mauser? Which the 8mm mauser is like the 30.06? So would that mean it's like the 30.06? Or am I just confused

Many bullet diameters are named in metric while others are in freedom units. Don't overthink it

Even if you reload, bullet availability isn't great. I'm not going to search that out for you because it would be a google search so you can do that for yourself.

Not a complete comparison because the bullets aren't the same design but this is from ammo that's available.
7.65 ballistics from Chuck Hawks +2.3" at 100 yards, 0 at 200 yards, and -9.6" at 300 yards
7mm08 ballistics from Hornady: +1.8" at 100yards, 0 at 200 yards, and -7.8" at 300 yards

No the 7.65 isn't better ballistically at 100 yards. That means to hit the target at 200 yards you have to aim 2.3" high at 100 vs 1.8" for 7mm08. In this scenario, the 7mm08 shoots .5" flatter with a ballistically superior bullet at 100 yards and that superior ballistics is maintained well beyond 300 yards. I don't think you could push the 7.65 hard enough to be better but maybe at best you could gain a little with new powders and improved bullets which are very limited. What I'm saying is I wouldn't bother.
