Ok I am starting the planning for next years hunting here in Idaho and I want your guys opinion on the Snake River A tag. So questions that I have are WOuld hunt unit 53 or 63? What are the herds like in those units? What is the terrain like? And any other info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Steve

I've hunted 63 quite a bit. Mostly during the late archery mule deer hunt. I grew up near Unit 63.

There are elk there year round. Its wide open sage and agriculture with some relief. The elk hide remarkably well. At first look most people say "There are no elk here" They are there. More elk move in with snow.

T Bone -- you seem to be the goto guy for Snake River Elk questions. I know that I’m going back 20+ years for this thread, but if you search it, you’re the guy that comes up and you’re still active over here. I just drew a SN A tag and looking at the map there are NO mountains of any kind in this unit. I'm familiar with the area around Pocatello and would appreciate a little directional help narrowing down the geography. I'm a 54 year old guy, and have never killed a bull elk, hoping to get it done before i get any older! I would love to talk to you about the Snake River elk unit. PM me and I can send my phone #.

For anyone reading this, I can offer hunting advice on the Pavant range in Utah (Elk or Deer) the Paunsaugunt range in Utah & The San Juan Abajo region in Utah.

That's going a ways back.

My info is outdated.

Here is where I'd start......water and feed. This year is crispy dry in Southern Idaho. Those elk will be traveling miles across the sage flats on a daily basis for feed and water.

Best of luck.
