How do I know a "Pre-Rem" Marlin 1895 when I see one?

One of the many guns on my "wish list" is a Marlin 1895 Classic (Not the Guide version). However, I am curious to know how I can identify a Pre-Remington rifle when I see one? And with that said, at what price can I expect to find a good, used specimen? I am looking for a good brush gun that I will use in the woods and weather. I am NOT looking for a museum piece.

Should have a JM stamped on barrel close to receiver.

I don't think all pre-Remington Marlins will have JM stamps but I could be wrong...You'll know a Remington made one because the serial number will start with 93 (2007), 92, 91, 90, 89 or MR (2011+). I believe the 2007-2009 versions had some major quality control. My 2012 Remlin has some edges that I wish they would have cleaned up but otherwise good.

Used JM stamped Pre-Remingtons often sell for as much or more than the new productions.

I think you can look up the serial numbers online

Also, if the general fit and finish sux...it's probably a Remington...

LOL. I half agree - my Tikka doesn't rattle, but it does smell like plastic.

I was referring to the "Remlins" in my disparaging remark (not all of Remington).
