Handshakes

I remember my father teaching me and my brother how to shake a mans hand and look them in the eye when you do
we were about 7 and 5 yrs old but I guess he was to old fashioned living through the depression and serving in WW2
what did he know
When I shake a man’s hand, I do not judge the firmness of his grip, but the view, into the windows of the soul. A person can shake my hand with the squeeze of a titan, but if he don’t look me in the eye, he is hardly a man at all.

Men in my family never hugged. All I can remember growing up when seeing my uncles or my pawpaw they always extended their hand. I would squeeze and squeeze and would say squeeze boy I don’t feel you squeezing.
Every now again when I meet someone for the first time and shake their hand I get some comments “that’s a hell of a handshake.” I think a good handshake looking a person in the eye and asking how they are doing is a perfect way to start just about any conversation.

My thought is the complaint has little to do with a handshake and more about a whack job customer. This is one good example of why I am glad not to have to deal with the general public in my work. Hopefully the manager showed the idiot customer the door.
Of course they were probably too much of a coward to complain in person so I might bet it was an online complaint. How ridiculous.

Firm and the eyes...I remember it well.
But since I'm a "boomer" post rona , I go with the 10 paces limit...
Or I'd just use the back of my hand.

I do the knuckles and the blowup only. If the knuckle bump is weak I know they aren’t following their MTN OPS regimen and therefore an inferior human being.

If the person doesn’t respond with the bump and blowup, I know they aren’t a true ultralight, backcountry, elk YouTuber/podcaster with literally dozens of views.

Here’s your new catchphrase if your buddy kills his bull. “ When I met that joker, I reached out and broke his knuckles.”

A good handshake is akin to 69....just fits. But if the handshake don't fit, I don't give two $hit$ 😂

Seriously...can confirm I may have been judgmental by a handshake once or twice in my life. I hate it when I go for a handshake and it misses and then it's the awkward handshake on my part, I just want a re-do. Then there's a couple of females I've shaken hands with that have a crushing grip. On those, I feel somewhat inadequate and feel sorry for their husband.

in all seriousness, a good handshake is worth something, but only something. it's pretty damn low on the list of things that'll make or break your career or anything else in life.

a person can have a good handshake but otherwise be insufferable in every way possible or vice versa.

a handshake, while momentarily notable about a person, really hardly registers for me as anything that matters about that person.

Tell me you have a weak handshake without telling me you have a weak handshake. 🤣

My handshake is my word and I expect it to be yours. My wife tells me that everytime I shake someones hand to seal a deal that it's a sure sign I will get screwed. Sometimes she is right unfortunately. A handshake today isn't what it was yesterday.
As far as the grip strength, I had very strong hands when I was younger. Aluminum cans, single walnuts etc. were easy to crush with a few fingers and thumb. When someone would try for the grip of death I would wait a few seconds and give them a little crush. It was kinda fun at times. My son's buddies would all give it what they had just to try the ol man. You could see it in their eyes when they had enough.

For the most part I do not care for the tradition of handshaking. But I will admit that when obliged to do it, a good firm handshake does provide a moment of respect and trust. When a man tries to crush my hand, I immediately lose all respect and trust. Especially trust. When someone, male or female, offers me a limp dead appendage to grip, I get this sick feeling like I have somehow just violated and molested that person.

Wasn’t that long ago when a persons handshake said a lot about a man (or woman). This week my nephew whom is a higher up manager for a large retailer got reported by a customer he met for having to hard of a handshake. FFS. What the hell have we become.
You otta go up north, like to the Indiana area. Those people won't even hold the door for you, say excuse me, pardon me, ect. They will ask for your name before they introduce themselves though, haha! Extra strange and rude fo sho!

I'm thinking about my friends that I regularly shake hands with. Garry, 86 years old and a nice firm shake, Fred is a dairy man, early 60's and a strong solid grip, Al is a machinist and also a solid but not overpowering. My son is a mechanic and he gives what he gets. My doctor is firm but gentle. My shoulder surgeon asked that I give it all I had to test my shoulder . He asked me to stop.
