I listened to this podcast last night and found it to be a really good one. It’s with a fellow named Amesh Adalja, Who is a senior scholar at Johns Hopkins. If anything, he downplays the rates and statistics of this virus as much as anyone I’ve heard.
One thing he did say that I find terrifying, because I find it to be believable, is that society’s response to this virus, is a dress rehearsal for others to come. Viruses will jump from animals to humans again, and it is entirely possible that a virus could be more contagious than Covid 19, but have a mortality rate of 60%. Play that out in your head.
I could imagine such a disease being the end of society, and my priors are being updated to place potential pandemic as maybe the greatest existential risk to our nation, and possibly our species, that exists. It really is a potential problem that requires more than just an executive office that could be shut down or resurrected at the whims of a president. Our ability to fight pandemics should be staffed and working toward R &D in such away that the certainty and power of its existence would be analogous to that of our military.
This guy is very measured and knowledgeable and this podcast is worth listening to.
