Corona virus

I listened to this podcast last night and found it to be a really good one. It’s with a fellow named Amesh Adalja, Who is a senior scholar at Johns Hopkins. If anything, he downplays the rates and statistics of this virus as much as anyone I’ve heard.

One thing he did say that I find terrifying, because I find it to be believable, is that society’s response to this virus, is a dress rehearsal for others to come. Viruses will jump from animals to humans again, and it is entirely possible that a virus could be more contagious than Covid 19, but have a mortality rate of 60%. Play that out in your head.

I could imagine such a disease being the end of society, and my priors are being updated to place potential pandemic as maybe the greatest existential risk to our nation, and possibly our species, that exists. It really is a potential problem that requires more than just an executive office that could be shut down or resurrected at the whims of a president. Our ability to fight pandemics should be staffed and working toward R &D in such away that the certainty and power of its existence would be analogous to that of our military.

This guy is very measured and knowledgeable and this podcast is worth listening to.

contrast the experts fears of animal to human infection to the dismissive idiots in our ranks involved in the CWD discussion.

I don’t put much stock in Fox News, same goes cnn, as both are full of shit. However this gave me pause. One has to wonder what the real numbers in China are.

The grocery stores where I live are empty. There are zero cases in my city and only a handful in the Phoenix metro.

We can work from home if we want.
Same story here, two confirmed cases about 30minutes south of us and all the stores have been cleared out. My cousin was at Costco last night and this was all that was left in the meat section. Luckily my wife and I are pretty good about keeping stock of the essentials and food. Not good for the people just trying to do their normal weekly shopping.90039221_10221598682541589_4670343963041857536_n.jpg

Went to my little local butcher shop last night he ain't no Costco guy and has a great selection of high quality steaks, roasts, you name it he's got it. Pretty much cleaned out by people buying 4 plus months worth of meat...... makes me glad both my wife and I got elk this year. It's insane out there, on a side note it's nice the gym is quiet now i don't have to wait for any machines.

I thought about wearing a facemask today to then I thought I don't wanna get jumped either.......

Y’all don’t find it a little weird that the shit’s hitting the fan and the guy with a direct line to the CDC is suddenly out of the country?
Infowars.com
This site seems to be reporting the facts. They’ve also got a non fluoridated toothpaste for sale that will cure CV you might want to check out.
You guys better be glad wllm's on vaca....;) We're all gettin it kicked in when he returns.
He has been posting in other spots, think he is just avoiding this one and for good reason. We all probably should... just sayin
It’s not like wllm to skip a good pissing match, especially one that can use charts. ;)

Few things I know from the 4 years I spent getting a microbiogy degree.

Some of these guys are wicked smart.

The handful that went past BS were heading to med school. The rest to a lab.

By every definition they are nerds. In A great way, but most of them weren't on the football team dating cheerleaders.

All of the sudden they are now rockstar's, celebrities. But they are just men, and they to get addicted to fame and attention.

Saying something outrageous, or scary, or controversial gets you that attention.

Of course viruses can jump, but science isn't stagnant either.

The Spanish flu killed a lot if folks. Ever look up deaths in 1918 and see what else was killing folks?

The majority of dudes in here live on or near the largest volcano on the planet(yellowstone). We defy gravity in planes.

There is a lot of scary shit.

But having had a pile of micro professors, everyone of them always liked to shock students with "what is possible".

STD sections were always softball sized genital warts.

Point is, same as any profession, there are the front runners, and the guys in the back doing the heavy lifting. In the middle of a viral outbreak, dudes doing Joe Rogan, or Sean Hannity, are just reading the work of the guys actually working.

"It will be ok"

Doesn't make you a celebrity or get you grants

Hossblur, they are not just saying it now, they’ve been saying it for decades. Disagreeing with them is fine, but psychologizing their motivation isn’t really an argument against anything they are saying. Right?

I guess what I am asking, is take the fellow from Johns Hopkins that was on the Sam Harris podcast I posted above. What about what he is saying is wrong? I am certainly not an expert in microbiology

Even keeping in mind that you can’t trust the Chinese government’s numbers to be exact, I find it very hard to take an objective look at the numbers of illnesses and deaths around the world, and then use those numbers to justify the reaction that we are seeing in the US.

For context, more people have already died TODAY around the world from hunger than have died in the world, since coronavirus began.

A few things I learned listening to the news recently.

The president told Hannity that his hunch was the fatality rate for Covid 19 would be a fraction of 1%

Trump said it's going to disappear. One day, it's like a miracle, it will disappear.

Trump said anyone who wants a test can get one.

Trump said a vaccine will soon be available. He said in India that "we're very close to a vaccine".

Trump wanted to keep the sick on a ship off shore because he liked lower numbers.

And on and on.

I guess if he didn't say the outrageous, he wouldn't be a celebrity.

I blame you for the coronavirus outbreak.
That statement is about as logical as blaming Trump.
Saying dumb shit doesnt give the virus extra powers.

It's a virus not a freaking administration policy.

Just trying to help. The statement that Obama “didn’t do anything” was ridiculous, but I’m not going to look the data up for you Apparently you are allergic to facts if the messenger is not of your leaning. Reminds me of someone else, too.
My only gripe on obama was he released funding to combat it way late after quite a few people already died. Other than that it was a virus and there is only so much a person can do to fight it.

My other gripe with H1N1 was that the main stream media was working with Obama on it not against him. So the grocery stores were normal just like everything else was normal and that's why nobody remembers or cares how bad it was. The main stream media has a lot of power over the sheeple of this country and their sheeple actions whether you want to admit it or not.

I don’t understand why we’re talking about Obama during the Covid crisis. I never voted for the man but his past actions are irrelevant to what is happening now.
It is relevant...every administration's actions on virus outbreaks of the past are relevant and new administrations should learn from how things were handled. What worked? What didnt work?

Really? Is Trump going to follow any of Obama’s good actions. Not likely.

You should spend your time thinking about the failures of the current administration. Trump’s actions will result in thousands of more deaths because the US ignored containment.

I haven't seen posts comparing and contrasting past administrations activities, effectiveness of quarantines, effectiveness of vaccine funding, etc etc etc. What I see is, "Trump is bad", "No, Trump is good", "No, Trump is evil", "No, Obama was eviler", "Prove it", "No, you Prove it", "I could but the media won't let me", ad nauseam . . . . . . .
