There's a guy at work that brings them in, the wait-list is long and hard to get on.
Oh, you returned a flood of PITA days! Daughter had to have chickens. Wife all for it. I was outnumbered. I built a chicken fortress. Projects grow... Next? from three flipping chickens, we had far too many eggs! Hmmm.
Take a drive along the country side... There's your ticket Bigjay, find a family that sells their overstock of eggs. I guarantee you, if you see a chicken coop on someone's property, knock and your whoppin $18 per 24 eggs (That is an absurd price, BTW) will fade to heck - I don't know, but they want the excess gone.
Edit: Actually, I take back the "guarantee" portion. Metro/suburbia Colorado is not the same as Flathead County, MT. 1.) Considering the Colorado price, maybe demand at hobby egg families have their work filling their supply.

The store I shop at has been selling eggs at a loss to attract costumers. Like they sell turkeys at a loss around thanksgiving. Picked up two dozen at $3.79 each this week.
Now my daughter tells me her chickens have started laying good again. They have apparently been on strike for the last couple of months. So now I'll be going back to getting most of my eggs for free.

Most municipalities in the metro area max you out at six chickens, if you follow the rules. The key is to stagger ages so you always have new birds. The younger ones lay more frequently. Will be culling a couple old non laying hens shortly to make room for more in the spring. Unless you use artificial light to up egg production in the winter the production drops drastically. In the summer we give a lot of eggs away and water glass them for the winter. Right now with molting and winter we aren’t getting many. Average about one a day and we may or may not have more than the legal limit. Hopefully they are done molting soon and get a few more eggs per day.

We buy our eggs at Costco or Winco. Prices have fluctuated from 12$/5 dozen to 29. Avian influenza has really hammered egg producers.

9 meals worth of excellent protein for $12 is still a bargain. And of course you can get 18 eggs for less than 12 bucks still. They won't be the very best but they'll still give you plenty of protein and nutrients. So eggs are still a bargain. I think they have been underpriced for a long time.
