And they are in direct sunlight? I have never used five gallon size so I do not now if that is an issue or not. They do drain well by design so it could be too tall and too much direct sunlight especially in the heat of the summer. I would try putting a few in an area where they get some shade in the hottest part of the day and see what happens. I use 2 1/2 gallon size exclusively except for carrots I use flat ones that are about 18x24 size. Taters do good in semi shady areas.no, not soggy, the only soil that is wet/damp is the first 4-5 inches and it dries out too fast. Could be the bags I have which came from A.M. Leonard which are good quality. Mine are 5 gallon size.
