Yeti GOBOX Collection

You know who you are!

I saw the eastman's thing too. I've gotta think it was a typo, and they meant a different root unit.
Definitely squashed whatever little stock I had in their research section.

crybabies....
I’m surprised “Bowsite” let the thread go on as long as they did. Like most hunting forums, they tend to take a dim view when opinions get heated. Hunttalk is about the only place where posters get away with calling a spade a spade.
You made some good points on that one Buzz, I’m sure the regulars learned a thing or two and that can’t be bad.

Shoots-straight,

I still think there is some good hunting in Montana...but I also agree that it really isnt what it was even 5 years ago. Things have tightened up, I've seen this before. The early 80's were tough...at least where I hunt.

I also tend to agree that there are better states...but I dont really hunt Montana with the expectation of taking a real trophy quality animal. I hunt there because its where I grew up and also so I can spend time with my Family...I have ties to those Mountains. Plus, I still think to get a good idea of whats going on there, you have to put some boots on the ground. I contend that long-time hunters have a better understanding and feel for what is happening regarding management at least in the particular areas they hunt. My area in the Blackfoot, I wasnt kidding or trying to be a smart ass on the Bowsite thread...I dont honestly believe there is anyone alive that has spent more time in that unit. I've hunted, trapped, fished, etc. in that country for a very, very long time. I have a pretty decent idea whats going on there.

We need to stay connected to the resource...in the good times and bad...if we want to steer management to address the current, as well as future problems. Plus, the FWP can certainly use the money.

Its also fair to note that the hunt is way more important than the kill. I had a great time hunting in Montana this year...and the animals I took where only a part of that.

Let me know when that web-site is up and running...I need to join.

Shoots-straight, I agree with what you are saying. MT isn't the best place, but it's certainly the cheapest with the most opportunity. As for "big bulls".. I only saw 4 different elk while hunting this year. I also only saw 4 mule deer bucks that had 4 points per side. A lot of days spent.

The thing that really turns me towards suicide bombing, is we had it. For a general hunt, with a great chance at a good bull, just 5 years ago, it was good, really good. I knew most Montanans didn't know at he time how good it was. Hunters like Buzz, Tjones, Fin, maybe Greenhorn, (might be just a little too young), and myself, knew what tough was. The 70's and early 80's where some tough years for elk. With restrictions the game came back. Things are different now for many reasons more than just predators. I hope the bastages woke up the sleeping giant elk hunter.

Thanks for the fun Buzz, it was a good ride over there.

Too young?? Thanks! I'm older than Buzz. I didn't start hunting elk until 92, but will say that 10 years ago, I easily saw more than 10 times the numbers of elk that I've seen the last couple of years, hunting some of the same local places. Mostly predators - but oddly enough, there's more hunters around too these days.

You guys really know how to depress a guy.
Now that I hunt elk the way they're supposed to be hunted, and am really getting back into where I need to be, the numbers are way down.
Six or seven years ago when there was, according to FWP, four times as many elk in the drainage I hunt, I was driving around in the truck drinking coffee with my dad all day, shooting whitetail from the road.
Boy did I miss that boat.

Randy11, there's still more elk in most hunting districts than the 70's and 80's, I killed my biggest bulls then. Maybe with less opportunity, they'll be less hunters, followed by bulls reaching older age. Time will tell.

Horn, your older than Buzz? I thought Buzz was older than me!

No not really, just kidding Buzz. Where's Bighorn Ram? Iam getting bored.

I tried hunting in the 70's but the dang diaper kept getting caught on all the blowdown. I decided that 2-3 year olds just shouldn't be out there, so I waited till around 85 to start.:D

I wondered the same thing many times when the debate about outfitter licenses came up last month. He and Mule used to chime in on those topics, but after the big hulabalu we had about that topic last spring, they just disappeared from Hunt Talk.

I am an old fart around here. I've got Greenie by 5 years, making me something north of Methusela.

Randy11 - Don't fret too much. Another 20 years and we will be too old and decrepit to get back to where the elk are, and you will have them all to yourself. Hell, maybe even in 10 years.

..sophomoric but not as dumb enough to buy scentloc or anything similar for it's edge. I'd share such product test criteria on bowsite.com, but it would be locked and deleted before the first twenty doctor bob clones could educate me in the ways of elite and hilarious bowhunting facts.

Hmmm...he went from being winded 100% of the time to 40% of the time. :p
