Head to the bar and drop a Grant or a Franklin on whisky and beer...but cant afford more for a hunting license...only in Montana.

We already have a licence in Montana that we pay extra for. It's called the hunters enhancement licence it's for state lands. Maybe we could add $20, $30, or maybe $40 to the hunter enhancement licence and put that extra money towards block management. Then, do away with the OSL, keep the NR licence competitive with other states in our region. Actually I think that a guaranteed tag of any kind would promote NR to lease lands up in our state. So if there all on the same playing field there would be no reason to lease lands that they may or may not hunt.

We could also increase the resident licence by $20 accross the board . That would maybe decrease resident hunters, and increase revenue. It would be better than the issuing of A-9/B-12 cow tags. I would rather pay more, have them issue less tags so we can get our herds back to healthy numbers.

I've only hunted Montana once for 2 days and killed a gret bull. It was too easy so I haven't gone back

Buzz- I've only got one comment about raising resident fees. I'm not really oppposed to it but it won't do any good to raise fees if they don't cut the total number of hunters. I'm not talking about only cutting NRs.I'm talking about cutting hunter numbers across the board whether it is by shortening seasons or going to a draw for everything. I'd rather hunt elk every other year as a resident and have a healthy herd, than hunt every year and keep depleting the population.
In region 1 the last two winters have done more harm to our populations than wolves ever did. Now we have more wolves than ever, just as many hunters and the few local drainages that didn't suffer winterkill in 07 and 08 are getting hammered by hunters that used to be spread out over a lot bigger area.

Gerald, if the price of admission is increased, then many households that now get tags for the dormant wife, will be the first to go. You could also stop the sales of most big game licences after the start of season. We already have done that with lion and bear. That would help. Lets make it harder for the poachers first. I think there's a lot of things to try. We need to jab MFW&Ps into trying some.

That is a great thread. I didn't know anything about the "Come Home to Hunt" license. Thats friggn sweet! I'm not sure I'll be going home this year, but seeing that there is opportunity for it in the future I keep it in mind.
I was looking at the application and noticed that the last line of the explanation reads...
"All money received from the sale of these licenses, must be used by the department to acquire public hunting access to inaccessible public land"

How much land does it take for 1000 more hunters to hunt on? Are we going to gain more land for less hunters? I don't think so. Like I said before. I don't have a problem with family membes having a better shot at a tag, but to add another 1000 tags only fuels the outfitters camps with more clients. We need some limits on these numbers.

I agree with you that really the resource doesnt need another 1000 hunters in Montana...currently.
But, it still gravels me that outfitters are not required to make some cut-backs in tags...just seems its always the average guys that take the hit...and its always the NR's that are cut first.
I guess I wouldnt mind making a sacrifice and SHARING the bad times, if everyone made a sacrifice...but I'd also like to share the good times as well...

Buzz, it doesn't matter how many tags they sell right now. The product the state is putting out is of poor quality, and well as quantity. I wouldn't be surprised if the available tags didn't sell out this year. If I was a NR hunter I wouldn't come to Montana. Lot better states elsewhere.
Greenhorn, please don't start posting pics of you big bulls to disput me. You got a good thing, and might want to keep it that way. It's not so good for the rest of us, and we're all looking for the the next best spot.
BTW, I saw in one of Eastmans last magaizines that area 250 of the Bitterroot was a top pick for mule deer. I flew with FW&P on a good representative area of 250 that boarders the famous limited entry 270 area. We saw 226 mule deer, and of those there was 3 bucks. 2 Forkies, and a 3 point.
