Wolf Hunting in MT

Calling All Predator Hunters,

I have purchased my first wolf tag and I love the idea of a 6 month season, no holds barred hunt. I also recognize the need for predator population management, and would love to harvest one of these incredible animals. If any kind, wise soul out there would like to share some wisdom and tactics, I would greatly appreciate it. I've been cutting tracks around Bozeman and near the Boulder Valley, but haven't laid eyes on the beasts.

First of December I'll be hot after them in the Drummond area myself. I'm going to use my Sceery predator call and coyote call in addition to howling. Best of luck to you and keep trying. Maybe this year will be it for both of us!!

Far and away the most difficult animal in N. America to intentionally target/hunt. Steep learning curve and LOW success rates. The search function is your friend. After you have read all you can on this site, go over to PredatorMasters and read all the wolf hunting posts there. Good Luck!

Thanks for the tips. I realize I may have one or two chances at a wolf in a lifetime of hunting. It's a good excuse to be in the woods and feels like a way to play an active role in protecting game populations though, so I'm game!

I've learned to keep a rabbit call and howler. My closest has been at a deep forested frozen lake last winter.

Yeah the NW is thicker than a snicker! I'm hoping to find a frozen lake or large meadow, then try my hand at calling with cow calls and howls. I'm also looking into predator calls. I guess you can use electronic calls for wolves!

I’ve hunted them hard and I’ve killed two, neither of which I killed while hunting them hard. Someday I would like to intentionally get one. Won’t be easy but good luck!

They are on my list for hunting this winter . I already have two animals at the Taxidermy shop . But I will still hunt hard for them.

My buddy sent me a video tonight that made my Blood boil . It shows to farm dogs barking and then a hole pack of wolves comes in after both of them . I'm sure you know the Sad ending this . I sure feel for our Ranchers here in Montana . This is a big problem . Im going to do my best to fill a few tags this winter.

I am also going after them this winter, based in Bozeman. I have a couple of spots picked out near the park border, hitting the first one this weekend with snow shoes. I don't have any calls, but might pick one up this week. I have howled them in twice before while bowhunting, but couldn't get a shot (closest I've howled them in was 80yds). My plan is to hike until I cut fresh track, find a vantage point, do some howling. I'll let you know how it goes.

Three falls ago I had one come in to 25yds to my cow elk calls. Caught it in the corner of my vision, turned, we saw each other for split second, and it ran off. Huge, fast, and silent.

I had the 217 elk tag a few years ago, and heard wolves one night in the timber above Jens, right at last light as I was walking out.

She hasn't got to pose with a dead wolf yet. She has been really close to live ones though.
