Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

What is the nastiest place where you have found elk

I passed a nice bull in Nevada that was killable with a cross canyon shot, but it was in such steep stuff we weren't sure if we could get to it if it fell, much less get it out. I was with a buddy who I helped fill his central Idaho mountain goat tag two months prior and had no problems in that country.

A couple guys I spoke to prior to the NV hunt about the tag spoke of "bulls in mountain goat country" but I didn't believe them.

Unit 51 in WY. The elk were at the bottom of a very steep & rocky river gorge. It was hell & dangerous getting in & out of there, especially packing a bull on our backs!

There was a 350 type busted up bull in the center of this picture about a quarter of the way up from the bottom.

For me, seven rugged miles from the truck with no trails and a very specific route that requires pack animals and perfect weather conditions. I've packed out 6 animals from this place but I won't hunt it in back to back years due to the difficulty of trip planning and access, plus the fact that I like to let the place have a rest year between my visits. Hope you all have found - or will find - a spot just as special some day.

Weminuche wilderness, SW Colorado. Watched a herd of 30+ graze for days at 11k feet, two ravines out of reach. Enjoyed watching them but never once thought about going after them, much less shooting one. Would have rolled 1k feet down into a completely inaccessible drainage anyway. Every day of the season, the herd moved another ridge further into the wilderness.
