Finally got around to reading Horn of the Hunter by Ruark earlier this year before an Africa trip we did in August (just vaca no hunting). It is excellent and absolutely worth the read whether or not you ever go to Africa. Ruark is a hilarious author, and then just when you least expect it he works in little gems of sincerity and insight.

Been on a kick of reading novels set largely in and around Texas. Last few have been Lonesome Dove, The Son, and currently 3/4 through Blood Meridian. All have been damn good.

Also purchased a reader’s guide to BM (“Notes on Blood Meridian”) which gives a ton of historical context and clarity to obscure references in the novel. Highly recommended accompaniment.

Reading River of Doubt written by Candice Millard. Only a few chapters in - enjoyable read thus far.

Summary from Amazon:
I’ve had this book sitting on the shelf for a couple years and I’ve finally gotten around to reading it.

Holy crap, what a book.

Always thought this would make for a great historical movie or a Netflix type limited episodes series. This is a non fiction life and death "adventure" of Theodore Roosevelt and those with him, including his son... Without spoilers, I'll leave it at that.

No clue where it's packed. I just ordered the audible version. I'll see if the imagination from reading matches the narrator's presentation of the harrowing and tragic events.

Thanks for bringing that one back to the forefront.
