Unit 64 and 65 colorado

I will be hunting for the first time in units 64 and 65 and would like to know how the camping works? Are there specific campgrounds for these areas and where can I make reservations? I have never hunted before, so I am new to the whole experience. Dumb it down for me if you could, thanks!

1) Determine which state you're in
2) Determine which agency owns the land you want to camp on
3) Use Google to find the administering agency office in that state
4) Call them

Most public land is blm and national forest. More camping opportunities in 65. Plenty of places to camp. No camp ground needed. If you have to camp in a camp ground there are a few in Cimarron. You can camp at ridgway state park. You can make reservations on the cpw website.

Elk 1st rifle season. Oct 12-16. Idk what you mean by truck or backpack but we will be driving a truck and using a tent for camping. And it’s just two of us.

Ok, well good luck. I'll be in there myself for muzzleloader deer, don't know much about the elk hunting there though.

I only need to know where to camp. I have always relied on other people to make camping plans and I’ve never gone hunting so I have no clue what to do.

You should have no trouble finding a decent spot. Drive the FS and BLM roads near where you plan to hunt. Most decent spots will have been used before and have rocks piled into fire rings/etc.

Google earth can give you an idea of the area/layout if you want a campground, vault toilets (sometime water)etc. near where you want to hunt as well.

So you can do what is called "dispersed camping" in some areas of the national forest and BLM. Check their website to make sure that you are OK to dispersed camp in that location. If you want a bathroom and things that provide more in terms of comfort, you can try and camp in a FS campground or at Ridgway State Park. We camp at Ridgway a few times a month and it's nice. The only issue is that it might be some distance from where you want to hunt, though. Most FS campgrounds have vault toilets and water, which can be nice.

Silver Jack reservoir in 65 has a large campground, adjacent to good habitat.

There are campgrounds in and near Montrose.

U can camp anywhere u want on national forest and blm. Find a decent spot pull off the side of the road and camp if u like. Unless there are special restrictions for that area camping is allowed anywhere on forest service and blm in all states.

Look on google maps for campground around where you plan to hunt, make a reservation if possible, and get very good camping gear suitable for extremely cold conditions, usually considered 4 season gear.

65 there is a camp ground at silverjack reservoir. Alot of the first service roads have pull off sites.

I have not hunted 64, but have spent a bit of time in 65. I would look at one of the forks of the cimmeron for a spot. No organized campgrounds up there but plenty of flat spots for your tent. There are not tons of elk in the unit, but scenery cannot be beat. If there isn't much snow on the ground, we have had luck finding elk at the Aspen and spruce/fir interface elevation. If there is heavy snow, elk can be anywhere in the unit. Good luck.---R
