Ukraine / Russia

To your first point. I find myself getting more hawkish as I get older and we're about the same age. For me personally, and this is totally irrational and borderline racist I admit, it's is increasingly difficult to watch these Ukrainian families and in particular the children, that look just like mine, continue to be attacked. It "hits too close to home" even if it isn't anywhere near my home and in fact, intervention will only bring it closer to home. I would also be lying if I didn't add that Zelensky has made me want to support them more.
An interesting point - not much global handwringing over worse brutality in Chechnya.

Television shows us what we watch. No one seemed to care about news from Chechnya so we saw little. White blond and Christian hits the news. Olive skin black hair and Muslim, not so much.

I point the finger at myself as well. I have paid way more attention to this than the other.
I faced the fact, in the beginning of this invasion, that if they had invaded Jordan, I wouldn't have cared half as much. It's a huge disappointment that I have to rectify.

I think it's more that *just that though agree with the sentiment.

I believe the reason the world is glued to Ukraine is largely due to the following:

I had a lot of the same gut wrenching view with Aleppo with children and civilians. I imagine many here did as well.

I would add, considering the frequency of many here posting - the cause for research, viewing, and media attention drawn for sake of content here, it accelerates our sentiment as well.

I am fairly certain a significant portion of people have been gullible, humorless, clueless, tribal, and provincial throughout human history. All that is new is that the internet allows them to put this on public display.

But ya, it does make for challenging discussions.

Even Rush L. (in his early years at least). I got to meet him in the early 90's and in private laughed at how serious some folks took him. In the mid 90's my dad, sister and I had to take the radio out of our my parent's home for my mom to keep her sanity as he whipped her up into an existential frenzy every day.
Amen,

We hide the remote at my parents house but mom always finds a way to get Fox News back on.

I've been telling her for years that people who make substantial incomes talking about issues have absolutely no interest in seeing those issues resolved. Better to pander and cash the checks.

For me it is driven by having colleagues I have shared meals with in both countries. But the same would be true for others in other conflicts. Every war hits the innocents, maybe society would be better off if we gave them all a voice and a platform.

Russia is targeting civilians, thats not "just part of it."
Good Lord I can’t believe I’m trying to defend Russia. Were the reports of combatants being inside of that building true? I’ve kind of lost track of everything.

I will agree if they were intentionally targeting civilians in bombings that’s not good, if it was a accidental hit or errant rocket, those things happen. The Afghan family that we drowned during the withdrawal is a good example of that. Shit happens unfortunately.

Putin didn’t think the world would care in this case either. Now im not sure how he can back out of it and still declare victory.
He’s got himself into a bit of a corner. Which isn’t good for anybody. Best case scenario for him would be if he can negotiate some type of peace deal with Ukraine He keeps crimea in the two separatists area’s and he with withdraws. He will at least be able to continue to blow smoke up the Russian people‘s skirts claiming he achieved his goal and there would be something left of Ukraine for the returning Ukrainian people.

Russia doesn't "Target" civilians. Not really a concern one way or the other for them. They just line up the barrels and demolish everything they can. It's the Russian Military's way. They don't go" Hey that hospital down there between the two air fields looks like fun, should be some kids and nurses there..

They just destroy er all.

Get out the way or end up in the rubble.

IMO, he will eventually win the war of attrition. Over time he will take over the country.

He will never control it.

Being indiscriminate to the target and actually “targeting” seems like splitting hairs. But I would agree you are technically correct.

Your expectation seems a little contradictory. He takes over but will never control it? I think I get your point, but control is an illusion. You can only control those who agree to it. Without agreement there is no control. For Putin, it just becomes his Afghanistan. Meanwhile the west continues to move away from Russia with remarkable speed and the flow of money that gave him the power suddenly dries up. The quickest way out of this is Putin has a “heart attack” and in six months we go back to status quo. The slow way is far more interesting to me.

Sounds like Ukraine said no NATO but Russia gets nothing else and GTFO of the country.
