Thanks John, but u suck now get out!

As an educator, ignorance is not true bliss. We must start teaching our true history. Our history has determined our present and will help determine our future. It’s hard to walk forward while turning a blind eye. It’s frustrating right now when people want to deny history and science. I am a nationally board certified science teacher that is also a Christian. You wouldn’t believe what I hear from families. Parents pissed at me for teaching genetics and pissed at my buddy for teaching accurate depictions of our forefathers. My job is to teach the truth as we know it, not make people feel all tea, crumpets, and unicorn farts.

My dad was a middle school science teacher he received this book from a kid's parents during after the geology portion of his course.
"This essential handbook provides detailed information on the geology, climate, formations, fossils, history, and ecology of this national landmark intertwined with a powerful biblical perspective—refuting the evolutionary view of the Canyon’s origins."

Yeah... this place actually exists

I thank you for teaching the truth as we all know it. It's not an easy job and your probably underpaid. I could be wrong but I feel like you are a minority in the teaching world. My step father and sister are both teachers and this is not what they witness on a daily basis in their high schools. University is another can of worms. My wife is in her mid 30s and has been back in school she received her masters and is now working towards her PhD. I sit in and listen to some of her online classes and its atrocious what the professors are spewing. Like I said were mid 30s were not wet behind the ears I have been in the work force for almost 20 years and I've lived a little bit all over the country. What their spewing is not truth...its opinions and your made to feel like an absolute horrible person if you question it. Trust me I know cause my wife challenges them all the time and she is very disliked by classmates and professors alike.
I agree that we have a real lack of intellectual and political diversity on our college campuses. This is a huge problem, one we need to find a way to address. But as with most things, the "truth" lies somewhere in the middle.

You can see a caveman riding a dinosaur if I recall correctly. As a person of science and a practicing Christian, this silliness really grates on me.

?? I never said anything about this stuff?

We've been doing it since the 60's and now another icon will be besmirched and relegated to the memories of the oldtimers.

Doing what? Did you John’s history before reading the article? Did the article besmirch him? Are the statements about Muir false? I’ve been looking and they don’t seem to be. Wow, his buddy Osborn was an interesting cat. An amazing arrogant scientist and seriously judgmental human. He identified piles of dinosaurs and deeply studied eugenics while thinking Hitler was cool. Now that is a resume.

Specifics? I didn’t even get into what happens when I have to teach body systems and dance around evolution/natural selection.

Learning about the past... after the fact.

If monuments do not garner interest for the past, they wouldn't be targets. Monuments to some by name or statue may be readily passed by. To each his/her own. To others, they represent a grand view of valuable history.

I personally don’t think they all should be torn down necessarily. I think they can be modified. They should include the whole story somehow, maybe a plaque? Changes to the statue? Maybe moved to a national museum?

I believe in this case the Sierra Club has just opted to own their history and move on... I doubt we are going to see any physical statues moved or names changed.

Does the Sierra Club even own a statue? Aren't the various statues of Muir public property owned my the state of CA or the city of Dunbar?

As far as I can tell these are the physical monuments and they don't really own any of them.

Lol... Shell Oil gave someone a statue of Muir, that irony is delicious

You're right there is that line at the end.
Revised.

The line aside, I don't believe other than a bust or something in a building they really have many actual statues under their ownership.
Honestly, I think they knew their checkered past was going to come up and just got ahead of it. Addressed their problems and provide a solution to them.
I think the Muir name will still mark lots of things.

Muir saw the beauty in nature, but not people. He was a man of his time, but he was also a man that could effect positive change that did.
