Splitting points in WY

Also, I know a guy who wanted out of the points game this year and it was his "use them or lose them year".

This other guy wanted to hunt with his nephew, but they didn't have enough points.

So, the guy and his nephew applied as a group of three and split the regular priced cost of the 1st guys tag and now they are elk hunting (and for cheaper than the special tag might I add).

The guy giving up his points has a tag and never intends to leave his home state. So, this is 100% for sure happening.

Also, I should mention that the guy and his nephew have decided to keep up the guys 6 deer and antelope points to use them next season as well.....

I’ve got no problem with that necessarily. It’s when a guy with no points decides he wants to hunt and can make a phone call to the right people and get hooked up with their pool of point splitters that I start to get a case of red ass. Especially when some of these people with points never accumulate them with the intention of hunting but accumulated them strictly for the purpose of selling them off via a point split scam.
You gotta hand it to the outfitters that had the foresight to start building a pool of people with points for future clients.

I'm guessing it will likely never change. Someone brought it up I'm sure to a meeting and afterwards, someone at Wyoming Fish and Game looked into how many preference point buyers they would lose in a year and as a result, the amount of money they would lose each year. I don't see it happening. They lose that money just because for some people:

My wife and I have both have 11 Elk and 11 Antelope points in Wyoming this year.

If someone said to my wife and I that they would offer us a hunt on a great private ranch in trade for half our points....we would likely take it. Who wouldn't? Funny thing is, we are not even looking for 350+" bulls. We would likely settle for 300" bulls.

Not the type of hunt we prefer but if someone approached us with the right deal, we would probably take it. We will likely have 1 chance to hunt Wyoming with these many points in our lifetime. Maybe a general tag after this. But the reality is, we will explore all options because there is a bubble of applicants directly behind us that you will not overcome in 20-30 years.

Our other plan pushes us into the jaws of the potential looming 90/10 DEA which is going to be pushed heavily and will be catastrophic for NR if it passes. We would prefer to be out of the Wyoming game when that happens.

I have 19 deer points and I can't say I wouldn't consider a really, really good offer. If it benefits both parties, and it's legal, then why not?

I agree with you, it’s not changing.
Just to clarify though, the reason it doesn’t sit right with me is because I believe it’s undermining the integrity of the system and is getting into the area of wildlife going to the guy with the most money (not a new thing).
I’m not naive and I know the real world runs on money and the people with more of it get to do more things. I’m all for it. And if I had a chunk to spend on it I could do the same thing. It sounds like I’m whining about it because I can’t do it myself but it really has more to do with the shady deals surrounding a few. Point splitting itself is a good thing. Ethics in hunting get fuzzy really easily. Maybe I am naive and am just getting tired of seeing what I consider abuses within our system.

The difference is that you accumulated points with the intent of using them to hunt. You didn’t buy them because Joe Bob the outfitter is going to pay you thousands more for the points 5 years later.

I'm guessing the perks aren't as great as you are envisioning.

Look at a few of the posts earlier in this thread. We are talking about getting paid basically somewhere in the range of 1-3k for your 5 years of points. The points still costed you for elk $250 over that time frame plus fees. You are also putting yourself at a pretty good risk of whether or not this decision to grab a general elk tag over one of the limited entry hunts costing you 10-15 points. Granted, the Wyoming general is still a dang good tag so I think the risk is low but there definitely is for sure a difference in the type of hunt as some of those 10-15 point elk hunts are pretty special.

I agree. The Wyoming non-resident preference point system is one of the last truly pure, just and virtuous things left in all of North American hunting.

It breaks my heart to think there are heathens out there that would desecrate it like this. What are we teaching our children?
