SITLA the organization responsible for management of Utah School Trust Lands has a mandate to maximize economic impact for benefit of our schools. Most Utah School Trust Lands are open to public access including recreation through agreements between SITLA and State of Utah. A large parcel 28,000 acres was planned for sale with likely transfer to State of Utah, Division Natural Resources but a higher bid offered by Ute Tribe.
I'm hoping the Utah Legislature takes this issue up next session and repeals the mandate SITLA maximize economic impact and applies some balance to protect and promote public access on these lands.
