Old Log Cabins & Pioneer Barns - Pictures.

1960s I’d guess. It was meant to be a warming shed at a ski hill, but who would have guessed that a ski hill in Iowa wouldn’t work out? There is still a picnic table and wood stove inside. It’s on public land now. The only animal I’ve ever shot from a vehicle and the only deer I’ve ever shot with a high power rifle was from the drivers seat of this bus during the CWD season in Iowa.

An original dugout of homesteaders on our ranch dating back to roughly to the late 1880s.The rifle was found just outside the entrance. We were able to clean it up enough to get the serial number and it was sent to the Cody Wyoming Museum and they were able to give us some information on it. I don't have that saved on my computer though.

We are going to need to know what the rifle is. Looks like an 1886 Winchester from here. Very cool find.

This I boxley cabin in sheridan Indiana. It was built by George Boxley in about 1828 who escaped jail after loaning his horses to slaves that started a revolt. It is believed to be a popular hiding spot for the underground railroad.

This lonely old structure seemed to be slowly losing its battle against the wind. Harding County, New Mexico.

I know a ton of old cabins and sharecropper houses around here in Georgia, next time I'm out and about I'll take a few photos to post.

1615527248954.pngI suspect this building is a powder house used to store dynamite and caps for hard rock mining. There is an excellent example right off the road on the way to the town of Elkhorn, Montana.

I noticed the post of the cabins with new metal roofs, nice to see. For anyone interested in the the push and pull of preservation vs. benign neglect deterioration a wonderful book is " A Land Gone Lonesome" by Dan O'Neill about the Yukon-Charley region of Alaska and Park Service management of the cutural resources there. Eminently readable and riviting. Just a superb book.

If I were king for a day one of my acts would be to amend FS policy or law and put metal roofs on every shake-roofed Forest Service cabin in the Wilderness. It's wonderful to preserve these artifacts but there's not much to preserve of a shake-roofed cabin in a wildfire.

Here’s one on my neighbors property about a mile from my house. It was built in the 1930s I believe.

I ran into the landowner the other day and asked him about this cabin. It was moved to this location in the 50s but built in the 20s about a mile away. There was a rostafarian commune and this is where they lived. The landowner said I could go in and this morning I had a chance too. The landowner is a very wealthy older man from Chicago. He said if I want the royal oak cook stove I can have it. I think it’d be fun to have, restore, and use!

Old cabin I found in colorado. I don’t think Dick Proenneke would approve of the joints but pretty cool find. I’ve thought about taking a metal detector up to it but I don’t really know the protocol there.78C65CC0-E356-4B7E-BAB5-965F6C150D6E.jpeg8D3EEA73-5BE5-4975-A158-77A610A3E24C.jpeg9F03CC37-8A22-402C-B821-B7140DF2980A.jpeg

Ducked into the timber the other day to wait out a snow storm, and built a fire to dry out in a grove of really old fir trees.

Started noticing a bunch of old stumps here and there. Then spotted an old cabin down hill a little ways.

Don't know how old it is, but guessing from the 40's or 50's?

On Christmas Day, 1933 my father and his parents moved into a dugout cabin. This fall I got to take my son, son in law, brother in law and nephew to the remains of the cabin and took some time to honor their memories.
