Northern NY Adventures with Crossbowguy 2020

So like most of us, I would rather get 2020 over with and move onto a new year without the Media, rioting, oh and this thing called COVID-19! The great thing is that I have focus on family, a few projects around the house, and no where near as much about food plots and hunting.

In a couple of weeks I will be tagging along as my dad goes on his first bucket list rut moose hunt in northern Maine. We are very excited and I have two very good friends that I need to thank for this opportunity but they will remain nameless for now. As most of you all know my father has a bad heart, so we never know if this will be his last season or not. He keeps battling through it though and I’m hoping I will be posting stories and pics shortly of a successful hunt!

We have some amazing bucks and bears on our three properties again this year! Dads camp is still for sale in Hopkinton NY, so if anyone may be interested in an awesome property DM me and I can get you all sorts of information. Mom was at camp last night and took this pic out the front window.

I hope everyone has a safe 2020 hunting season and I will do my best at trying to keep everyone up to date on what going on here in northern NY.

So dad and I leave for Maine next Tuesday for his bucket list moose hunt and we are getting pretty excited! The guide has been calling saying that things are looking better and better up there. The bulls are getting more vocal and more aggressive to the calls. Knowing dad I know he won’t be too picky when it comes to the size of the bull so I hope a monster walks out first thing!

dads scope was all messed up on his rifle so he changed that out and got it sited in so that is now ready to go, got some camouflage to wash and gear to pack then we will be ready to go. I will keep you all posted!

All loaded up and ready to take the 8.5 hour drive northeast to Jackman ME. We had a week of colder weather with frost this past week which really put the colors into full pop. We are awful excited to see country we have never seen before so I hope you guys enjoy tagging along.

Well we made it to northern Maine and found out that our guide scored this morning calling in a moose for another client! So tomorrow we scout and the hunt starts Thursday!

First morning scouting day in some of the most beautiful country up early driving old logging roads, dodging ruffed grouse by the truck load and lovin every minute of it!

opening morning sit we managed to help dad down hill to a log landing cut last year about 26 miles off the main road and a half mile from the truck. It was down a small skidder trail out to a point of trees overlooking a small opening. A pond was a few hundred yards to our right through a thick chunk of balsam fir trees, a moose river straight ahead about a half out, and a place where we had called the night before a few hundred yards through the woods to our left. We got dad settled in covered in sweat because his old ticker doesn’t work like it should but he was still smiling and loving every minute of it. Leah our guide started calling just as the trees started to show from the morning skies. Immediately we hear a response from our left. Our guide worked the calls masterfully only to figure out someone was sitting and calling from where we were the night before. So we sat think we would just let them call for us. We did have one bull respond from our right and a cow from behind but were unable to pull them in with the hunters across the way playing their electric call for 20-30 minutes straight and only resting for 5 minutes like they were playing old records for the moose! So onto the next spot!

First evening hunt looked promising with lots of sign, big breaks and rubs everywhere. We were half a mile off the main road and transported dad in by wheeler to get him to a nice hardwood ridge over looking a swamp bottom. After some calling we got a cow to bitch at us but no bulls to be heard that night!
