Moving to the South?

Lives in central Oklahoma for 20ish years. The whole time I was there I looked for ways to live in the mountains. Some of the best people I’ve ever met, climate and geography, not so much.

Still have offspring there, can’t say children cause they’re grown. Dont make it there often enough.

If I can sway you either direction, feel free to pm

I grew up in southern Ohio. I miss a lot of things about it. The farming communities, sports, whitetail hunting and having plenty of trapping/hunting opportunities out the back door with property being more affordable. Also a lot of good paying jobs compared to the median house price. I’m just glad my wife and I stretched ourselves in 2015 and bought a house. Otherwise I would have been gone a long time ago. Hopefully somewhere else out west but who knows. I’m too financially motivated to have a lot money going towards rent. I’d be one thing if it was an affordable rent, but that’s not the case in Bozeman. Sucks, cause a lot of the people that make Bozeman the place it is are being displaced for the same reasons you’re looking elsewhere. We’ve had a lot of friends move on. Best of luck with the decision, it’s a tough one.

I just have to go on the record, I’ve never heard anyone claim Oklahoma as being the south…
Or Arkansas but Clay Newcomb is an Arkansas native who also hunts the neighboring state of Oklahoma and he talks of being from the south. I'm with you though. I didn't know it was the south.

I'm originally a Okie spent 22 years there and still have family and friends back there. I lived in Montana since 2013 (sorta part time in WY). Before that in Ely/Caliente/Vegas, and Colorado/Wyoming and about 15 other states on utility projects.

OK has some the best fishing anywhere I've been (better than Ak or NZ).. Ft Peck and the Missouri River system is comparable. Some really good deer hunting (even on some public), lots of feral pigs, predators. We used to hound hunt back there and it was great times.

Mostly really productive land comparable to most of the west. My one brother still raises cattle back there and it's way easier than MT ever thought about. Gardening/fruit trees etc are. It used to get way colder back in the 70-90s compared to the last 20 years. Way different climate and weather now.

The eastern 1/3 is very pretty compared to what people think of western Ok. Some rugged country in spots.

My brothers both own construction companies back there and do really well compared to me.

The Marijuana laws ruined a lot of it, and increased the property values some. Meth in my former area is really bad and both me/brother had one person try to kill us. He can't really live his farm s whole lot bc he is worried about thief.

You can PM and I can give you my number. I couldn't do Gallatin Valley too many steers and queers. Better parts in MT like other said to work in and raise a family.

@Flatbrimmer you have skills that are worth a lot. Reinvent what you do with them to make a better income around the west somewhere. Defaulting to Oklahoma just out of convenience, some family there, is NOT taking control of and possibly not improving your situation is my encouragement for you.

I'm moving from Bozeman when my kids graduate but staying in state.
Good luck with whatever you decide.
