Montana General Season Structure Proposal

I think if u hunted elk in the rut with a boom stick. It would be hell to find a 6pt bull after 2 yrs. On public. I understand the thought October muley is a hard hunt but it changes the entire elk season. In a bad way. Why give up what we have for a chance that a few mature mule deer survive and in my opinion make things worse for the public.

Iam an elk hunter, because that is where the challenge and chance is are in montana to kill a mature bull.

Serious question. Do you think that the amount of raghorn bull elk that get killed first week of the season because they are still with the cows will stay the same or be less if elk opener is bumped back to the first week of November?

Hedgehog best way to explain it to u, without drawing in crayon. Is this, we have shoulder hunts, kill cow elk from August to February. With our current season structure. With landowners that don't allow hunting. Some are generous and allow cow elk to be harvested. With the bright idea to put 200k mule deer hunters out there in October running around looking for a 4pt. Pushing elk around in the process. Is that really a good idea. Sounds good. No rut hunt. 10 percent live another yr.
Do the elk not get pushed around with the current season process where you hunt? Honestly trying to wrap my mind around your situation.

Edit: are you killing your mature bulls early or late currently?

I understand where you’re coming from, if I’m getting it correctly basically changing the status quo on deer to a different general season stands to pose a threat to the elk hunting you know, whereas going to deer LE in your mind helps the deer situation and keeps the elk hunting the same as you know it.

It’s hard to say really how any of that plays out during any of the proposed changes. But I will say this, a lot of people Now are currently dissatisfied with the elk situation also.

Just my .02 on this Gerald. I think harvest of raghorns would be down slightly the first week of season, but they are still dumb as a post and would likely get killed at some point in November.

People are disappointed with the elk hunting because they c 1000s of elk on private. In fields. Hunting public is a skill or luck. To kill a bull.

Playing devils advocate then…if they all get pushed to private anyway during an October deer season then what’s it really matter if that’s how it already is?

No, some public still good elk hunting. With a 30 day mule deer season make it worse.

Let's do it. Some change is better than no change. We as tax payers should try to figure out a way to defund fwp though. Because we gonna feed public elk and have private rule them.
