This morning I had a shell not fire on a buck. Quietly as I could I racked it out and another in and made the shot. I have a Savage axis 2 in 30-06 shooting Hornady sst superformance ammo. This is the first Hornady round I’ve ever had this happen with. A couple years ago when ammo was hard to find I pick up some SIG ammo at bass pro. I could only get maybe 1 out of every 3 or 4 rounds to fire. I contacted SIG and they sent me another box with the same exact results. Figured the ammo was junk but now I’m wondering if it could be an issue with my gun light striking the primer. I’ll attach a pic. Would love to hear your thoughts and if should get someone to check out my gun. It’s probably only had 4 box’s shot through it since I bought it new 6 or so years ago. Thanks.

Wierd I've got a savage axis but not the new savage. Mines in 7mm-08 and I've been shooting the superperformance and I haven't had a issue yet but I did notice a few of the dents from the pin looked shallow I just wonder could it be the primers hornady are using? I had some old 22 shells that wouldn't fire off because the primers were to hard wonder if that ain't the case on these shells

There have been other people who've had similar issues with other guns. I'd clean the firing pin/spring, and consider changing the spring as well. Maybe you have some runs or grease that's slowing the firing pin. Grease can dry out and get hard.

I had the same thing happen with my .280 x-bolt. The firing pin barely made an indention in the primer. I lost a pronghorn because of it. I’ve never been able to get it to replicate what happened. It has fired every time I’ve shot it since.

You likely did not have the center part of the AccuTrigger fully depressed and flush with trigger when pulling the trigger. My dad and uncle have both had this issue with their 220 shotguns which has that trigger. Idk how this doesn’t get more attention but is a big no-go for me. Easy to happen with gloves in a hunting situation. Dad has missed two opportunities and uncle at least one. All their primers from shells that didn’t fire look like yours. They were convinced the shells were the issue for a while.

If you want to try and replicate it load the gun and point in very safe direction and just pull the trigger without pressing the center part. You can do it unloaded too but you will think it fired as it’s hard to differentiate. Idk what to call it but the firing pin falsely? moves forward a bit and you have to lift the bolt to reset.

Thanks I’ve never heard of this issue. I’ll try to test it out.

Just tested your theory and there is no doubt in my mind that’s what happened. It sounds completely different when the trigger is pulled without the center part pulled also. Will definitely have to keep this in mind in the future. Thanks a bunch!

Np. My dad had a gunsmith modify the trigger but it still happened. If it was me I would prly just put a Timney in it.

I don’t get it. How do you pull the trigger normally without pressing the blade in the middle of it?

Never owned a savage, just curious.

Your bolt wasn’t fully closed.

Check that….

We just got rid of a ruger American because of this. What a shitty gun.

When you go to fire done gun if the bolt isn’t fully seated it will light strike. Trust me on this. I pulled my hair out trying to troubleshoot a misfire this year and that’s what it was.

Uh, isn’t that how the Accu Trigger is supposed to work? That is, it shouldn’t fire unless you depress the center blade first (as you squeeze) and then execute the shot? I’ve got an Axis II and a 220 and seems that I remember reading in the owners manual that this is an added safety feature of the Accu Trigger.

You squeeze the center blade until it’s flush with the actual trigger and then execute your shot. I have no issues with the Accu trigger. It’s not as good as my Trigger Tech, but I like them.

I’ve had issues with hornady superperformance 223 53 grain vmax in multiple 223s having light primer strikes.

If your trigger pull is perfect and straight back, no issue. With gloves on and in a hunting situation sometimes your finger, especially when gloved, will be at a slight angle on the trigger, as you are pulling back the tip of your finger, angled away from trigger, fails to fully depress the trigger blade and the part of your fingertip further toward you hand pulls the trigger and - misfire.

That photo of the fired case sure looks like you had a light firing pin strike.
Correct, it is, and in some Savage AccuTrigger rifles is caused by the center blade of the trigger not being fully depressed.

If it’s an issue with the trigger then get used to the accu style and be sure you are engaging the center. My wife has a rug at American with similar trigger. It shoots well and we have never had a misfire.

It wouldn’t hurt to disassemble the bolt and clean it. Had a friend this season have that issue in a different gun.
