Logging project near Libby temporarily halted due to grizzly bear habitat concerns

A preliminary injunction was recently issued for the Rippley Logging Project stopping all ground disturbing work in the project area in the Cabinet-Yaak Mountains near Libby.

Well ya can't shoot grizzzz in Montana...so unless I'm missing something or poaching is problem I didn't know about up there I don't see how the roads are relevant.

Jamie Jonkel, a wildlife management specialist with Fish, Wildlife and Parks, said Monday two young bears spotted in Bonner a couple weeks ago were likely from the same North Hills family group that had raided a chicken coop in the Missoula area last year. Jonkel estimated that about 100 grizzlies live in the southern end of the Northern Continental Divide Ecosystem alone, with about 40 in the Clearwater and Blackfoot valley floors.

Probably because roads lead to higher human use and therefore, higher probability of conflict is my guess.

James Taylor & Carole King give Alliance concert revenue. That's their main line of funding I believe.
The funds used for litigating barely cover costs and it often just goes to the legal bills and not the staff time of AWR.

Still, I'm no fan.

Its basically right next to town, and from what I understand lies within the wildland-urban interface that is described in the county's community wildfire protection plan. The woods are thicker than snot in this area and it makes perfect sense to do this project, simply for the preservation of the airport and people's homes and property if it were to burn. This guy is delusional if he thinks there will be ANY effect to the grizzly population if it goes forward.

Most of what Garrity, et al, file on has little to do with the issues they raise publicly. Their tact is to pick apart any project to find the smallest infraction of NEPA and focus on that as the method to stall projects or stop them entirely.

In some instances, they have found serious issues, but overall, most of their lawsuits are just monkeys throwing S#&t at the wall to see what sticks.

I could be completely wrong but someone I know did some looking and I believe his partner, significant other or whatever is a primary lawyer for AWR. I sure believe he benefits from the serial litigation.

I hadn't heard that but it wouldn't surprise me.

He benefits more than monetarily.

I'm not sure that there is any such thing as an isolated grizzly bear population in Western Montana. It seems to me that grizzly bears are just about everywhere from the Rocky Mountain front west, into Idaho, and some showing up in Washington. So the idea that the Cabinet/Yaak grizzly population is some isolated declining little sub group is nonsense.

my choice would be to go ahead with the roading and logging operations,,helping the near extinct"american logger "species,,good forest re growth ,ect afterward would be good for the deer and elk afterwards.and also help the local economy.
