Gastro Gnome - Eat Better Wherever

LET'S TALK COFFEE :)

I have a french press & Melita system for power outages. Percolator for a fire or stove.
Volume. I can drink expresso after dinner and fall asleep.
Raised on Navy style coffee. Dark enough to stain wood.

I have a serious ? Has anyone drank that Black rifle stuff?

I thought it was all crap.
Dark roast tasted like lite 7-11 coffee.
Seals are wusses if this is what they drink. They did not learn this on patrol in a ship. Or on any base I have been around.
It used to be really good before they got huge. The flavor and freshness definitely had a pretty significant drop about the same time they started selling in places like bass pro and Walmart. I assume it’s just a volume thing but I stopped ordering because the drop in quality was noticeable.

Outsourcing to meet volume...selling the name is my guess. We still drink it here in the office but I'm no coffee shnaub & really can't tell the difference between reputed good coffee and cow urine IPA...

I'm glad you said that because I was just thinking that people who claim to like only dark roast are much like those who claim IPA is the best. :ROFLMAO:

So awhile back, I was in the mountains with my family. We had a campfire and put some coffee on in our percolator. While sipping the "nectar of the gods", I commented to my cousin that it was way smoother than a standard "drip" style cup of coffee. We chalked it up to the fact that everything is better over a fire cooked in God's great outdoors! However, I went home and got to fixing coffee in my percolator on the stove. Sure, as I am sitting here, typing slow as a snail, it tasted smoother than a "drip" style cup of coffee to my non-expert taste buds. Was this just a figment of my imagination, or is there some scientific explanation somewhere? I won't change my favorite way of cooking coffee based on that information. Away with all these overpriced commercial drive through coffee shops and electrified coffee contraptions. Stovetop percolator, freshly coarse ground coffee for me any day! NOTE: I still occasionally indulge in all of the previous. On another note, I think it would be a genius idea to make a wood fired coffee shop. We have seen an influx of these wood fired pizza joints, why not! If a guy with some financial backing wants to open a wood fired coffee shop and have different levels of coffee sitting on a grate in multiple percolators, go right ahead! My idea on a logo would be a wood fire with a percolator sitting in it, like the picture posted below. The name should be "The Percolator". You probably think I am crazy by now, but I just wanted to share the ideas swimming around in the dark abyss of my pea sized brain. I tried this coffee that Big Fin recommends, and it has been a winner so far. I am wanting to try some more flavors they offer. I will include some photos to exhibit the ideas I have portrayed. Hit me with all the pros and cons. I don't have any means to pursue this idea, I just thought it was a neat one! P.S. Use oak wood for the fuel source. Also, include all those fancy syrups and whipped cream condiment thingies to attract a more diverse crowd.View attachment 356048View attachment 356049View attachment 356050View attachment 356051
Beautiful !!!!

I drink a lot of micro ground instant, and I’m not afraid to make cowboy coffee, but the jet boil presses are handy.

Before the jet boil I was doing pour overs with an oil funnel and paper towels. Came up with that when I left supplies at home.

On rare occasion when I want to make a large batch for friends/visitors car camping I’ve done the “church basement” egg drop style coffee like grandmother used to for guests on the farm. It tempers some of the over harsh flavors from boiled to hell cowboy coffee, and can kinda help sequester to grounds before decanting.

When we were really poor in college (spent all our money on busch light) and ran out of coffee filters, we used paper towels for coffee filters all the time. Got the job done
