Is this for real?

200 pound wovles are like the mysterious 350 pound dressed out deer. There might be one, but they never seem to find their way to official scales.

They are saying that wolf is around 2.5X the size of the one Critter shot. I would bet every rifle in my safe that it was not even over 150# if put on an official scale.

Talked to the person who in charge of the capture and collaring project here in MT for many years. Largest she ever weighed was just over 120#. She says she knows of one wolf that when officially weighed, was close to 140#.

But, it makes for good drama in the wolf circles.

My thinking exactly!
Back in the day (post WWII) dad said a big one for him was 100-110. Only reason he would take the carcass home to weigh instead of skinning it out was because it just felt heavier to him. He was pretty sure that was accurate because his dad made sure what they used for wool scales was accurate (him being a tight Scotsman).

Thats a helluva a wolf, without doubt. But I'd be hard pressed to believe it went 200lbs.

Kinda like the 300 lb feral hogs we hear about all the time in Tx. The ones the hunter loaded by himself in to the bed of his pickup truck?!

I am sick of all the talk of the sizes of these wolves. It is some kind of biological phenomenon that has taken place over the past 15 years? Wolves held pretty steady at 80-120 pounds with a few outliers that go a little heavier for what 1000-2000 years? Now that they are hunted in the lower 48 they have suddenly by some miracle gained 80 pounds seemingly on average. Just ask most folks on many hunting forums and sporting good stores all across MT, ID, WA, UT, and WY.

Here is a good article.

I spoke with a friend this fall who has probably handled as many wolves as anyone, anywhere. The heaviest he has weighed was around 135 if I remeber correctly. He has handled wolves in Alaska, Idaho, Russia, basically anywhere with wolves. 200 pounders just don't exist.

I have shown this before. But its pretty cool. This wolf I got on cam a few years ago. Interesting story is, I saw it had a collar so I sent the pic to the local wolf guy. He knew which wolf it was, he collared it just north of Whitefish a couple years prior. He lost the signal to the collar almost immediately. I got this picture up in Eureka. He said he still should have been able to find it on his flights. A year or two passed when a bio in British Columbia called him and said he had a collar he might want back.

The wolf got across the Koocanusa Reservior and marched miles further north into Canada! It was harvested legally by a guy up there. The bio said there was a bullet hole in the collar!! No wonder he lost the signal so fast. LOL.

Anyway, this Canadian biologist said it was the biggest wolf he had ever weighed at 146 lbs. Pretty impressive. He also said it had a 17" skull!!

Wow, thats a beauty Draht! Yea, don't know where people get this idea of them being so big. We had a guy we ran into when Randy and i were hunting that said he had been seeing a 200 lber:):) okie dokie............

I had a pet wolf years ago and if i recall correctly, in his prime he was about 125 lbs.
I think many people get the impression they look bigger than they are because of their long legs.
