No sooner do I start compiling the 2023 anti-talkies, and there’s a scolding squirrel overhead.

31 and wind out of the west northwest. We had a 1/2 inch of snow yesterday but it’s gone mostly.

31 and sunny - might not be cold enough to draw out a buck, but it’s worth a try. Wind is perfect. Tight quarters, looking at a 15 yard shot, 20 max. With wet leaf litter over mud it will be difficult to hear deer approaching.



Baby could arrive any day now, and after that I’ll likely be done hunting except maybe a couple days for rabbits if it ever snows. Spring bear is out. Instead I am looking at fall hunts for bear, antelope, or grouse, maybe some trout fishing too.

Too close to the golden hour for a crack of the handgun. With corn, walnuts, and red oak acorns available, I’m surprised he went for a honey locust pod.

1 doe, 3 fawns walked through at 25. No bucks. Finished packing my doe from last week, and found this broadhead, probably from 2 months ago. Both times I’ve found imbedded broadheads they were sharp quartering-to shot angles.

Finally, some good rabbit weather! Once the snow is out it will stay cold for a while and if all goes well I’ll plan to be out with my rimfire in a couple weeks.

Baby boy is here! He’ll be in the NICU for several days, but should come home after that. Mom was in labor for 39 hours, no pain meds per her choice, but baby stalled and we ended with a c-section, 1 day short of full-term. So far his appearance takes strongly after his mama.
