January Texas Draw Hunt - Deer and Hogs

I hiked in deep this morning. I saw a small buck around 8 o’clock. Unfortunately, the big buck didn’t show. Around 10 o’clock I decided I was going to start moving because it was so dang cold. I was about to freeze. Around 2 o’clock I finally got on some pigs, but the wind was all over the place today and it switched on me before I could get a good shot. I kept working around and finally decided I’d set up for the afternoon in a spot I marked yesterday. After about 30 minutes of sitting two guys walked through heading out. They never saw me, but I decided that I would move because they had come from the general direction that I was thinking some animals might come from. I decided I would move slowly through the woods for the last two hours of light and I began to slip along . Right after I started to move, I spotted this boar feeding on the edge of some water. He was rooting around and I was able to get set up on him. I made a good shot and he went right down.

We’ll see what tomorrow brings.

Is this just public land, go shoot some pigs or do you need to draw for the refuge to also hunt the pigs or what!?

I’m a lil jealous haha even without a big buck that looks like a fun trip, and it ain’t over yet!

Day 2. I saw some deer but no good bucks. Around 4pm I found a group of 3 pigs feeding in some grassy woods. After some patience I knocked one down.

I found what I feel like is a good deer area. It’s 2 miles in. I’m going pack in my climber tomorrow and hunt until about 12 o’clock then I think I’m going to start heading east whether I get a deer or not. It’s been a fun hunt.

Lots of wood ducks. They are absolutely packed in here. No big ducks.

After I shot the second pig yesterday, I decided I would hunt this morning until about 12 o’clock then begin to head home. On this hunt, I was able to shoot unlimited hogs, two does, one buck with a spread over 13 inches, and one buck with at least one unbranched antler. The area I was sitting in this morning was surrounded by Palmetto bushes. I always thought it be cool to shoot a deer walking through Palmettos. This buck showed up and I decided to take him home to cap off the trip. It’s been a great three days in Texas.
